Why is the 15" G4 Powerbook's screen resolution only 1280x854?

I would figure that since Mac's are used a lot for graphics, that it would be some variation of 1600x????.

I am a little disappointed.

I have been considering the IBM T40 for quite some time but, since Apple introduced the Mobile Radeon 9600 for the powerbooks and my recent discovery that other distro's of linux can be run on mac's may be just enough to change my decision. The lack of a high resolution screen is definitely a big issue for me though.

The powerbook has a slotload dvd/cdrw drive, backlit keyboard, bluetooth, Mobile Radeon 8600, and firewire which I find to be advantages over the T40.

On the other hand, I will be using the %20 off first time small business user's discount to get my T40 and I like how it has a 14" 1400X1050 screen. I wouldn't have to repurchase all my software, which is a lot and I can still play all the new games, albeit on a slower GPU.

Anyone with a G4 powerbook mind telling me how games run on the windows emulation software. IE: Age of Mythology and Rise of Nation type of games.

Does the screen resolution really max out at 1280?

Lastly how easy/difficult is it for you to dual book OSX/(Gentoo, Redhat, Suse, etc...)?

If you want to run linux on a pwerbook, you want Yellowdog Linux, which is basically RedHat 9 ported to the PPC.

And yes, that's the screen resolution. It seems fine to me, I'm using a 1280x1024 18" LCD on my desktop, 1280x854 isn't that much lower, especially for a screen that's 3" smaller.

I was recently informed that Gentoo, Redhat, Suse, and Mandrake all had PPC distros out now.

I just would like to have the screen 1600 for all the photoshop work that I would be doing on it, 1280 is a bit small when you are working on massive images.
