So I have Covad DSL 1.5Mbps/384Kbps and I'm paying an outrageous $65/month. It was a reasonably good deal at the time compared to Cablemodem ($55/month), and Verizon DSL ($40/month for 768Kbps/90Kbps) when I got it 2 years ago and I've just been too lazy to switch.
But recently, Verizon DSL started offering 3.0Mbps/768Kbps for $30/month so I jumped on the deal. The sales lady said that I didn't need to do anything to disconnect my old DSL service, that they would do the switchover for me. But when I got home today I got a voicemail saying that I needed to disconnect from Covad before Verizon could even start moving forward with my order.
Why is is so difficult? I'm pretty sure Verizon does the work in the CO on behalf of Covad, so why can't Verizon just unplug my line from Covad's equipment and then plug me into Verizon's equipment all in 1 shot. Instead, I have to disconnect from Covad which takes 3-5 days, then connect to Verizon which takes another 3-5 days, so I'll be without Internet access for up to 2 weeks while all of this gets taken care of.
In the end, it'll be worth it to get double the speed at less than half the price of Covad. But it shouldn't need to be this difficult. Stupid beauracracy I'm sure and the two companies being forced to work together so they make it difficult.
