Why is some PC100 ram so expensive?

I've seen some 256mb sticks of PC100 ram for 30 bucks, and others for 100 bucks. Is there a major difference between these? Or are these places just overcharging like crazy?

I've been looking for some of this RAM and want to be sure I get the right kind..

3 possible reasons, the more expensive RAM is either;
(1) Low density and works in all chipset motherboards
(2) Low profile to fit in small places
(3) ECC and maybe ECC Registered

Type one is your best bet.

I see, I see. Thank you sir!

One more thing, I also notice my old HP has PC100 64mb(which came with the computer) and PC133 128mb. I have two slots in that computer, could I put in two sticks of PC133 256 sticks or would I need to have a PC100? Common sense tells me I can just get the two PC133's, but since I am lacking in knowledge about computers, I feel I should ask first =p

it's also pricey because their obsolete and no one makes them anymore. ram is something everyone wants, and they might as well add more ram to make their older systems better. for example, my uncle spent $130 on 512mb sd ram to "upgrade" his 600mhz dell, so that he doesnt have to get a whole new comp. IMO, i found no performance increase and found it to be a waste of money. i was the one who installed the memory.

Low supply = High price. They don't make the stuff anymore I don't think so prices are going to be highier than stuff that they are producing large amounts of like DDR etc.

Welcome to supply & demand. 🙂

PC133 should in theory work fine, but I've had multiple bad experiences with older PC100-compatible HP motherboards and their dislike of PC133 RAM. Definitely choose a place that allows you to return stuff without a restocking fee.

That's nothing. Look at some proprietary ram modules for old laptops, they sell for ridiculous prices on eb*y. For example, a 64mb memory board for an omnibook 800ct (proprietary) sells for nearly $100.

I would look on the FS/T forum ofr SDRAM. I picked up a low density 128 MB stick for $15 shipped the other day. I've seen 256 MB chips (also low density) for less than $25.
