Why is skype free?

They make money from people using the service to make calls to landlines - I guess their aim is to get it downloaded and installed on as many machine as quickly as possible and then people will begin using it for VOIP and regular calls

as far as I'm aware all calls over VOIP with Skype are free - calls to landlines are chargeable and you need to put credit on your skype account to make them

cause they dont use any resoures. voice is transferred over internet. its only a software. there costs are mainly programming ones.

make money by charging for landline calls.

And if I'm not mistaken since skype is P2P the network benefits from having people with free resources logged in?
