exactly. the taboo was invented by ancient civilizations on the thin edge between survival and death. the fragile societies couldn't deal with the extra stress placed on them, getting enough food to survive was hard enough. its the same as kosher food prep regulations.
You have to take into account the conditions that ancient peoples lived in when analyzing the decisions that they made, the customs and morals that they had and developed, etc. If people want to bring religion into this debate, I think it is very important to point out that the Israelites in the desert lived under entirely different and far more severe conditions than we do today. For them, daily survival was almost a miracle in and of itself, and anything that would cause stress and unrest in their society could lead to its entire collapse. It's for this reason (and the fact that Jesus clearly gave us new commandments) that I say that the fundies who like to point out Leviticus are so misguided.
However, sex -- in and of itself -- is not and was never immoral. Morals are the codes that a society creates for its own long-term survival, and no society could survive without sex and reproduction. It is irresponsible promiscuous sex and adultery that are (and have been) immoral in almost any society. Those involve the breaking of vows, the spread of disease, unintentional and uncared-for children, and overall stress that no society (not even our mighty society) can deal with on a permanent basis.
I'm no fundie though, and I don't think sex is bad. Just do unto others, eh?
