Why is Sarah Palin not a socialist?

Here is the definition of Socialism.

So she has a policy of raising taxes on oil companies and "spreading the wealth" to the people in Alaska in the form of windfall profits. Gettin' a $3000 check would get anybody a high approval rating.

Palins oil profits redistribution

Is this a do as I say not as I do?

Hippocracy has become the core campaign methodology for the republicans lately. Does this surprise anyone? This is just like MCCain saying Obama has run a negative caampaign while McCain runs 100% negative ads to Obama's 1/3. Its just total poop, and for some reason, this year, its totally transparent. Usually they hide it better. Thank you internet!

As much as I agree with your comparison, I hate the thought of even spreading this kind of word around. Hardly anyone understands what socialism is right now and it is being used as nothing more than to fuel fear, anger, and kill confidence within Americans. That is the last thing we need in this country right now regardless of what party you support.

I heard a guy on Neal Boortz this morning call in and say Obama was a communist because he, in part, supports progressive taxation.

My basic contention is that the vast majority of the public have no idea what any of the prevailing economic theories actually mean. Instead, everyone resorts to the "Socialism bad! Communism bad!" mantra that we all recited while so many of us went through our somehow freedom-inspiring government education.

The Marxism, Socialist, Communist, Hitler, AntiChrist, etc. nonsense are just memes perpetuated by people that barely even understand the terms. For all the mud slinging going on in this election, it seems the Republicans are more content with using indirect attacks by association rather than actually addressing the man.

Progressive taxation does not equal socialism or communism at all unless you are basically taxing everyone both rich and poor for something like 90% of their paycheck and the government is using that money to fund programs available to everyone. To compare what any of the currently suggested tax policies from any candidate to that of socialism or communism is absurd.

Socialism = McCain's new Terrorism. Don't fall for the BS.

Well Palin and her kids sure do love their oil revenue check.

One would think such TAXATION of fine upstanding corporations would be crushing to their profit incentive.

She also liked that sales tax that she campaigned against but kept in place to fund her craptastic hockey rink.

Good thing there aren't any socialists in real America.

Alaska really does operate under a kind of socialism. They have no sales or income taxes, and the entire state government is funded with oil money, the excess of which is redistributed to the individual citizens of the state. It's certainly the closest thing to socialism that we have in the United States.

In the past 20 years Comrade Palin and her family has received somewhere around $137,439.00 from the Alaska Permanent Fund, which now totals something in the range of $40 billion (depending, I imagine, on the current state of their investments).

I think Alaska's model of government is more of a welfare state than socialism.

Yep, Alaska is the most "socialist" state in this country, and Palin is a huge proponent of Alaska's version of "socialism."

IMO, the reason the Pubs are pushing this "Obama is a Marxist/Socialist" bullshit is not just because they are desperate, but to continue escalating the rhetoric in order to distract the party's own faithful from seeing their own brand of socialism, which has threatened to keep them home on election day.

No, we're all in agreement that those saying Obama is a socialist don't understand the term.

Well, this and the fact that the Republicans spreading this latest rhetoric are hypocrites.

Case in point, if you asked Buddyboy here his position on windfall profits taxes, he'd say they are socialist.
If you asked him his position on pork barrel spending and earmarks, he's condemn them as big govt.
If you asked him his opinion of Palin, he's say she's some kind of political Messiah of conservatism.
If you then then asked him to explain why Alaska's state govt under Palin was primarily funded by windfall profits taxes on oil companies and federal earmarks, and how she worked hard to increase both of those, he'd reply that Obama is a big govt socialist.

That's just the type of person we're dealing with here. Reminds me of that Churchill quote about democracy and a 5 minute conversation with the average voter.

Palin The Wealth Spreader: Gov. Imposed Oil Windfall Profits Tax To Allow Alaskans To ?Share In The Wealth?

"Palin explained the windfall profits tax that she imposed on the oil industry in Alaska as a mechanism for ensuring that Alaskans ?share in the wealth? generated by oil companies:
"And Alaska?we?re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it?s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs. ? It?s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans."
In fact, Alaska?s Clear and Equitable Share (ACES) program, which manages the redistribution of oil wealth in Alaska, brings in so much money that the state needs no income or sales tax. In addition, this year ACES will provide every Alaskan with a check for an estimated $3,200."
