It was a major route for the southwestern migration of alot of families in the depression era.

originally because it was one of the main highways crossing the country, from Chicago to LA, which meant it was the road to a new life for millions of people.

and then there's the song and the tv series.

If it ended in Hollywood, the chief purveyor of our countries' cultural mythology for the past century, it probably would be.

Are you saying Windsor never purveyed any cultural mythology?

Because it goes through St. Louis,
Joplin, Missouri
and Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty.
You'll see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico.
Flagstaff Arizona
Don't forget Winona,
Kingpin, Barstow, San Bernadino

What a trip!!!

I live in Florida and I had to drive to California in January of this year. I took Rt. 66 as much as I could. I drove up and caught it in northern Texas and took it all the way into California, before finally leaving it to head north into central California.

I had a blast! I have become somewhat obsessed with Route 66. I now carry a Route 66 keychain and I have a Route 66 calendar on the wall here in my office. I also have other Route 66 paraphernalia. LOL. Of course I like road trips and I found it very interesting. Lots of the old landmarks are still there. Many have been restored as it is making a kind of tourist comeback. Many are not yet restored but interesting none the less.

It was also interesting to see how the different states "market" the highway and try to build up their tourism around it. Arizona did the best job of that, IMO. Of course, I only saw 4 of the 8 states that it passes through.

I want to drive it again. I would really like to fly to Chicago, rent a car and drive the entire route to Santa Monica, CA., and fly home from LA. Someday ........

It was one of the main East-West routes before Ike started the Interstate Highway System. There have been songs, TV shows and books about traveling Route 66, most of them favorable. I had the good fortune to drive/ride most of it in the 1960s. Never did get all the way to Chicago though.

To all these people saying that it was "one of" the main East-West routes; that's a bit like saying that the sun is "one of" the main sources of natural daylight for the Earth. In its heyday, Rte. 66 was the only continuous road that linked the country from East to West. Also, it didn't end in Hollywood, it ended in L.A. Granted, there's not much distinction between the two and it's just a technicality, but Rte. 66 ran from Chicago to LA.

Right now Interstate 44 runs next to a lot of old 66.

Actually, it ends in Santa Monica, at the Pacific Ocean. Also, I can't speak about the 4 states I did not travel Rt. 66 (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma) but from somewhere in Oklahoma all the way into California, Interstate 40 runs next to the old Route 66. There are several places where Route 66 is unusable and you have to travel on I-40 during those stretches. I traveled Route 66 / Interstae 40 from Shamrock, Texas to Barstow, California.

As in the typical Montreal conversation in the 80's "What happened to soandso, they went down the 401?"?

You got me on Santa Monica. And on I-44. I was thinking I-55 but typed I-44. I-40 runs from St. Louis to LA and I-55 runs from Chicago to St. Louis.
