Why is Red Orchestra so unpopular?

there are like 8 servers for this game that are running 3.0 that have people on them according to ASE. This is probably one of the best multiplayer WW2 shooters i have ever played, it actually makes UT2004 worth buying. What is holding it back? what is it so unpopular? so few people have UT2004?

I was actually wondering the same thing. I recently bought ut2004 and downloaded R.O, and to my suprise, there are not many people playing the game. I expected a lot more servers(with good pings too =/), so I was dissapointed. I also heard a lot about R.O, and again, I was dissapointed to see that hardly anyone seems to be playing it. There are servers, but they're unpopulated, or full of bots. What gives?

Onslaught > all.

I glanced at the RO website, but didn't see anything there to draw me away from Onslaught. I'd guess WW2 fans are already playing the other WW2 games and don't see any reason to even try RO.

I really like RO also but I have a hard time with the map quality. I think the maps really need to be retooled for more coherent gaming.

RO sucks. In the aspects of actually fighting, it is too realistic for most peons to grasp, let alone master. If there is no targetting reticle while you're running full sprint and bunnyhopping that lets you put a full clip of bullets into the bad guy, people don't want to play it.

My personal experience with RO was that it is too difficult to play, and 3/4 of the time you die to some dumbass sniper right after spawning.

I have RO, but I've been to busy playing Onslaught to give it more then a look over.

And also there are like a half a billion different other good mods for Ut2004. It's nuts, the market is saturated.

as long as there are full servers, i will play. there is a issue with not being able to see non new patch servers with UT2004. That is why there are only 5 servers.

I'd never heard of it before your topic heading. I don't own UT2004 either. I did play the demo though.

Who has time to play all these games? I have Far Cry sitting on the shelf, because I had already installed and started both Painkiller and Doom 3. How am I supposed to fit UT2004 in? 🙂

That sums it up right there. UT2k4 is fairly popular, but ONS is what everyone plays. You'll find the occassional Assault, DM, or CTF server, but forget about DOM or BR(I actually like these 2 gametypes) . People just want something new and ONS provides it.

Drag brings up an excellent point as well: There are only so many people to play so many Games(including various Mods/Gametypes for each game) within so many units of time. Other than CS other Games/Mods have a hard time getting any attention, except for bigname released games such as RTCW, MOHAA, BF1942, UT2k4. Sad really, there have been so many Mods released that never got the attention they deserved because of these limitations.

The average UT2K4 player would rather spray rockets and energy beams all over the place than sneak around with an MP-40 because fast-paced, unrealistic violence is what UT is all about. There are definitely better ways to get your WWII fix than RO.

Actually I like running people down with that hovering, jump thingy.

Rockets are a last resort when I can't find something to run somebody else over with.

You mean the Manta? 🙂

As for why i don't play RO...it's far too slow paced...actually normal UT2k4 is too slow as far as i'm concerned.

I play regularly in a mod server that has Low-G (up to five bunnyhops at a time 🙂), far more deadly weapons (Benelli Shotgun, MP5, Zark Rifle), & a far faster pace...beautifully crazy sometimes.
I find playing default UT2k4 boring now....

Too realistic. Personally I like it, and wouldn't touch Onslaught or any other standard UT2k4 map with a bargepole. Feels like i'm playing a game where the objective is to make as many pretty colours and loud sounds as possible, as fast as possible. I enjoy more tactical gameplay, more time to think...more substance.

I did prefer Call of Duty though. Lean + slightly more forgiving gameplay. I don't remember a FPS frustrating me as much as RO sometimes does :frown:

i completly agree, but when you get going in RO it is awesome, i wish they had a single player with misssions like CoD or MOHAA does.

Of all the online WWII games I've played:

Call Of Duty
Call Of Duty: United Offensive
Day Of Defeat - Half-Life Mod
Medal of Honor
Red Orchestra

Red Orchestra takes the cake. There is a level of realism that doesn't go over the border. It makes me feel like I'm really there and provides great challenge. I have to admit, in the beginning, I was a bit annoyed with it. I played it for a while and didn't like it. Then, I was looking for the uninstall icon and couldn't find it. I was a bit pissed. Also disappointing was the lack of servers available. When I tried it a second time however, I played for 3-4 hours and enjoyed every moment of it.

You have to get a feel for it and change the controls. COD has the best keyboard controls and I mimicked them for RO. It felt much more comfortable playing. Then, you have to know what to do exactly. And that is known by pressing the 'O' key for objectives. Once you feel comfortable playing, then you'll really enjoy it. Just give it a bit of time and patience.

Now, if you don't like RO, then COD:UO is the one for you. This game can be said to be much more fun because, it's easier to control and provides more play options than RO. And it's easier and less realistic with weapons. Maybe, I liked RO so much because, it was too easy to kill people in COD.

DOD is another great WWII game, but with outdated graphics. Level design is amazing and it's sure to provide a hell of a lot of fun. In fact, the regular COD pulled me over because of graphics and at times when I became disappointed, I would try to go back to DOD, but I was too used to the feel of COD and Steam bugs didn't help either.

MOH is the sorriest online WWII game I'ved played. The one weapon worth picking is the sub-machine gun. I started playing and I gave it two shots as I did RO and both failed to catch my attention. Levels were boring, but the one thing is that everyone had a submachine gun and if you didn't have one - prepared to be slapped by one. Very unbalanced game. Don't know if they changed it, but I've given up.

I've played CoD and BF quite a bit, but I have yet to pick up UT2004. I played UT2003 and was completely abosrbed by domination gametypes. 🙂

Red Orchestra is better than Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc. The satisfaction that I take from picking someone off with a rifle is unsurpassed in any game. Objectives and stategy are key in the game. You will not win with a team of Rambos. The maps are the BEST I have ever seen in a game. I also wonder why the game is unpopular. Perhaps the reason is that the game has a steep learning curve. However, this is a game to stick with. It is excellent.

i've been playing unreal tournament 2k4, the new demo. i am in love with CTF-facing worlds. instagib is good too...i think i might have to purchase UT2k4 =D

I have been playing since I got Broadband (about 6 or so months), and I've loved every minute of it.
I play pretty much every day, for maybe a couple of hours or more. It's loads of fun, once you get into it. It's not a pick up and play blaster, you need to spend time getting to know it, and that I think is why many people don't play.
It takes too much time for some, so they get turned off.

My clan has bad 4 matches in the last 10 days or so, and another one that was cancelled, all about 8 vs 8.
There are players, usually there are 2 servers populated at most times, and none have bots on, because RO bots don't work.
You can usually get a game, but it can be difficult (empty servers suck, you need a fair few players for a game to be any good).
If people stick around it can be fine, but it's quite frustrating at first, and can be frustrating at other times too. But it's fun, especially if you get killed by a guy loads of times, and then you finally spot him, and sneak behind him to stab him in the ass with your bayonet 😀

I love it.
