why is printing of PDF/Adobe files so slow

Why is it that printing of PDF/Adobe files is so much slower than printing of files of other formats ?

Please note that I am NOT necessarily asking how to make the printing of the PDF files faster but am instead asking WHY the printing of the PDF files are slower than printing of other file formats.

I suspect it's because it's printing a whole image. With a text document, the only information to be printed is the text. With a PDF, even white space is part of the document, and it has to be processed. I may be wrong, but that's my guess.
