Why is plus gas always closer in price to premium than regular?

Take this picture:

Ahhh the good ol' days

There is a 10 cent difference between regular and plus, but only a 6 cent difference between plus and premium.

Yet usually, the octane is closer to regular than plus (for instance, I've seen 87, 89, and 93).

it just isn't balanced.

I believe its a leftover from the days of leaded regular which came in 89 octane & was the minimum required by most cars.

To the best of my knowledge no car requires 89 anymore & as has been stated they only keep it around because people buy it.
