Why is Outlook Express soooo much faster tha Outlook?

I've noticed that OE is much faster when downloading email tha Outlook, why is that? Email d/l is almost instantaneous compared to Outlook. Is there a speed tweak that will allow Outlook to be as fast as OE?

I can't tell a difference between Outlook and OE in the speed of the downloading of messages. Do you have filters enable in Outlook that could be scanning messages for certain text? OE definitely opens faster that Outlook though.

Nocturnal nailed it - OE has less to do. Sort of basic. It is also much less of a virus freeway.

Well, I do have some rules, but they all scan messages after they arrive.

And I was not referring to the speed of the program itself, simply tha OE seems to download messages faster.

Perhaps there is something else going on with your PC. I set both OE and Outlook to leave messages on the server, I left 24 messages on my mail server. I then retrieved the messages with OE (6.0). It took 17 seconds. I then did the same with Outlook and it took 15 seconds. I started a stopwatch the instant I clicked "send/receive." I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I don't notice a difference on my system. I am running Windows XP Home SP1.


MS Outlook 2000 (9.0.0.2711)
MS Outlook Express (6.00.2800.1123)

I did notice that when I opened OE, that AIM also started up even though I had it shut down. Hmmm....

I'm using Outlook 2002 (10.4712.4219)

I will perform the same (similiar) test on my system at work. I have Outlook 2002 on that machine.
