Why is nicknaming someone considered bullying? (Bush and the BigO)

While watching O'neill on 60 min, the reporter eluded to Bush having a habit of nicknaming people, The Big O in O'neills case she also said this was a form of bullying? Huh? i do this with everyone. My oldest son is "ditto" cause he looks like yours truly and wife I call "beaver" for other reasons. Everyone I know has a nickname and if they don't I'll give them one.

there are friendly and unfrendly uses of nicknames, nicknames used for friends tend to be friendly and to people you dont know unfriendly

I always liked his cute little nickname for John Clymer of the New York Times.
(Talking when the mic was on - but didn't know it)

'Texas Gov. George W. Bush finally made good on his promise to change the tone of political discourse in the country --
calling a reporter a "major-league asshole" moments before a political rally in Illinois on Monday."

do you really not see how you are discounting your son's individuality and sexually objectifying your wife with such names?

Gee Zebo, you're right. I'll remember to address my respected professor as Big O next time.

Edit: And yeah, 'Beaver' is very degrading

There's nothing more personal than a person's name. Nicknames can be used to impart familiarity or they can be used to create a hierarchy. Bush uses sarcasm to denigrate others but he rarely shows true wit. Someone like O'Neill who actually has wit and sarcasm knows the difference.

Chews "trees"? ;)

Nicknames can be bullying, witness the various names used when speaking of the French.

Hehe, I figured that's what you meant, but "beaver" may have been a poor choice, given it's multiple meanings/innuendos. ;) Perhaps "Ant" is a good alternate for those considering nicks for a future SO who want to denote "industriousness"? :)
