Why is New Madrid pronounced "nu mad rid"?

The same people pronounce Cairo as "kay row"
I think its partially a relgional thing. In southern illinois we have a cairo. If you say the name of the town like the place in egypt people look at you like you're dumb. The southern illinois town is pronounced, in southern illinois at least, like karo syrup. We also have a town called vienna. The place in austria is prounounced properly, the local city is vie-anna. Du quoin and du bois are of course not pronounced properly either.
