Why is networking so slow in win2k?

I've got a dualboot win98se/win2k system and I'm able to see everyone on the network in my dorm through network neighborhood/my network places. The problem is win98se browses the network as fast as a normal window while win2k doesn't. I double click on a computer and instantly I can see the files they're sharing. In win2k, it takes about 30 seconds for each window to load. What's the holdup? It's really discouraging since I'd rather use win2k as my primary OS but if it keeps slowing me down, I'm going to be spending a lot more time in 98.

Speed should be the same. Disable the unused network protocols. If ping is also slower, check the NIC's settings or see if there's an updated w2k driver.

How much RAM you gots? In general, things in Win98 might be a bit faster than Win2k, especially if your system isn`t that beefy.

If it is having slow name resolution, try an LMHOSTS file and put the machines you contact the most in it.

Had a similar issue. Turned out to be a DNS issue with Win2K. Check your settings and Hosts files.
