Why is my wireless range so weak?

SAWYER

Lifer
I can be driving down the road and pick up signals left and right but in my own house I can not get signal on the other side of my house. I ordered a netgear dualband dsl/wireless router combo and have it running on the G band only. I have the following devices connected
Xbox 360 wired
Xbox 360 via wireless bridge
two ipad's
two dsi's
desktop wired
server wired

my router is setting on my desk behind my printer

router with omni antenna needs to be high up. central location. try some +14dbi directionals.

2.4ghz is just too dirty these days. i have to have 4 routers to cover my house 2500sqft on 3 levels for wireless security due to interference. basement is pretty much by itself since it won't make it upstairs, then 1 main floor channel 1, 2 second floor channels 6, 11

standard omni's.

keep in mind the slowest device (weak signal) will slow down everyone on that segment of wireless

Ok this is BS, I moved my router on my tv stand and I still get a weak signal in my bedroom. The tv stand it not dead center but certainly more central that where it was, totally ridiculous. My room is maybe 15-20 feet from the router

Remember with omni directional antennas the area above and below the antennas are practically zero gain so make sure the antennas aren't "pointed" at the client.

Other than that it just sounds like noise/interference.

Mine doesn't have an external antenna, how should I position it?

The router? I would play around with it moving in 90 degree increments or just use the advanced features or netstumbler to tell you your signal to noise ratio to find the best. Don't forget to try channeld 1, 6, 11 and remove any other 2.4 Ghz sources - phones, microwave, bluetooth, baby monitors, anything that uses wireless.
