Why is my text fuzzy?

I have a Sony G520P on a Radeon 8500DV running XP Pro and when I run my resolution @ 1600x1200 @ 100Hz my text is fuzzy. When i have smoothtype turned off it looks horrible. when smoothtype is turned on it's a little better and cleartype helps a little more as well. It seems to do it at most resolutions above 1600x1200. I'm already running the latest drivers from ATI as well as the only drivers that Sony has for this monitor. Is there something I'm missing? Suggestions?

Two possibilities:
1. Filters on the outputs of the video card are reducing the rise/fall time of the video signal.
2. Bandwidth of the monitor?s video amp cannot handle that resolution and refresh rate.

Odds are it is a combination of both. Try reducing the refresh rate to 85Hz, and see if it makes a difference.

1600x1200 @ 100hz...phew...you probably run your monitor on the edge of it's horizontal frequency capability...

Try lowering vertical refresh (like the other one suggested)..or running a lower resolution...or use powerstrip and create a slightly lower "custom resolution" so you save a few khz and (therefore) might get a clearer picture. Powerstrip might also allow you to use vertical refresh rates windows wont you allow to use - eg if you only have the option of 80hz and 100hz you might use powerstrip and try if 90 works...anyway 80/85 should still be plenty...

Edit: may also be the focus...try if the monitor has an option to adjust the focus

when i reduce the refresh rate everything gets really bad....everything kinda shakes and pretty much just freaks out 100Hz takes care of the shaking but the fuzziness is still there. I seriously doubt that my monitor is at fault unless I have a defective one. I'm not even close to the max settings of this monitor (2048x1536 @ 75Hz). I am using the DVI to VGA adaptor that came with my video card. Would that cause a degredation in signal (not like i really have another choice but to use it)?
