Why is my system freezing then unfreezing?

Greetings Forum,

I am running a PIII 800 on a Vega board with 128 mgs of RAM. I have a PNY Geforce 4 4400 and a SB Live. My computer freezes and then unfreezes with great regularity. Is this dues to the crapinness of my ram, my motherboard, both, my OS (Win 98), or something else that I'm oblivious to? I have a VIA chipset, those drivers along with my graphics, sound, and modem drivers are up to date. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If this were 2000/XP you could look for errors in event viewer. I had a similar problem, but what was happening to me was I had a bad Lite-on CDR, and it would intermittently lose contact with Windows, which caused the freeze-up.

This sounds like the old "Via and SB live" problem (maybe). I would remove the sound card and see if the problem goes away. If it does, just buy another sound card and put it in ! I am not even sure of the fix for the documented problem, but you could research that also ??? New drivers for motherboard and sound card ??
