Isn't Columbus day a Government holiday (go figure this one, he freakin landed in South America anyway :) ) but that isnt the point. Why do I have classes today. This is a state school and it is a government holiday. beyond that, we never have any freakin days off :|

Ya, Uni sucks like that. Our Uni doesn't get anything off; not Labor Day, MLK Junior Day, President's Day, Columbus Day, and I'm sure there's more if I hadn't forgotten the holidays due to their irrelevance now.

I believe columbus day is just a bank holiday, not a government holiday.

My university is open also.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday, not a state holiday (unless your state chooses observe it), not a bank holiday (many banks are open today).

In Tallahassee:
Federal offices - closed
State offices - open
County offices - open
City offices - open
FSU - open
FAMU - open
TCC - open
public schools - open
of the 9 banks and credit unions listed in the newspaper, 3 are open

I find it funny that they close it for religious holidays but not these.

still have classes here as well. Not a suprise though, we had the roads closed and every school district around us close last winter... but we still had to go to class.

columbus day is state by state

i grew up out west and nobody took columbus day off

i moved to NY and it was a major holiday with almost everyone not going to work

so it depends on what part of the country you are in

If you're referring to College Park, no they don't. I just came from Calc II discussion.

Actually wait, I stand corrected. It is a "Holiday" today, but it's observed on December 29th.
