I previously had the 7004vbr, ran hot as hell too, 1 port ended up dying, it would lose my connection, and it wouldn't flash to the newest. It was all of 2 months old/ replaced it with a D-Link 604, and have had Zero problems with it at all.(the d-link runs tons cooler too)

I havea D link 614 wireless that runs a touch warm I don't think its really anything to worry about, but if yours is burning hot you may want to call them and see if its normal or if your just worrying about nothing.

well, I called the tech support and they said it's normal. not sure if it's normal but I open the case now and so far no problem even though it's still damn hot.

gonna wait another week to see how this perform

thanks

hi,
i had exactly that router and it also ran very hot. much hotter than any other piece of consumer electronics that i've ever had. it also would slow down and need to be power cycled every week or so in order for it to be usable. i replaced it with a netgear one which runs cool and i havent power cycled ever. i tried everything, including all of the latest firmwares, etc. smc's tech support was actually very poor. people there wouldnt read the details of the problems that you were having and kept offering beta firmware updates that were older than what was published on their website. (and also didnt help when installed). it sounds like your smc router is behaving like mine. imho, you should dump this router and get a netgeat or linksys one. there are usually very good deals on them...
here's and example... $25
link
good luck

does that router use an external power supply or is it inside the router? in side might = lots of heat.
good luck

it has one of those external "wall wart" power supplies.
