Why is my new WD 320GB SATA 8MB so slow?

just picked up a new 320 gb western digital 8MB sata drive from the hot deals and it is slower than hell. i have ran the wd diagnostic and it ends up timing out during the quick test giving an error code that it took to long to complete the test. it passes the extended test though. i think it's defective but am open to any other suggestions. here is a pic from hdtach http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Cooljt1/320gbwd.JPG
 
Hi there, I was just wondering i ran the same test and got 49.7 Average MB, is that about correct? im just double checking my whole comp to see if everything is running ok

Not sure about the transfer rate, but for the WD quick test error - have you checked to see if you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled on the hd and in the BIOS? I was having that same problem when I first got my 3200JB. Looking up the error code that was given on WD's support site pointed me to S.M.A.R.T. being the culprit.
 
Yeah definatly something wrong there, like somebody else said, try disabling S.M.A.R.T. and try another SATA port. Might want to try a differant cable as well. Make sure you don't have the cable bent too much as well, I've heard that can cause problems for SATA. I really suspect the drive is bad, but it doesn't hurt to eliminate some other possiblities first.
 
oh man i figured out my retarded mistake. i forgot i dont have my ide drives auto detect in the bios, it was disabled so the drive was probably running at pio mode 1 or something. anyways its up and running now and working great.
