Why is my ND-2500 burning at 4X in an external USB enclosure?

My ND-2500 used to burn at 8X internally, but ever since I've mounted it in a 5.25" Bytecc external enclosure all my programs say that it'll only burn at 4X.

What gives? The DVDs are the same (8X). Has anyone else had a problem like this?
