Why is my LCD TV such an energy hog?

I got a 32" 16:9 HDTV and it uses 170watts measured and that's more than my 21" 4:3 CRT.

32" 16:9 = 27.9 x 15.7 = 438in^2

21" 4;3 = 212in^2

So indeed the surface area is a little over twice as large, I was expecting it would use less power than the CRT. My 21" CRT uses around 100W measured.

On an LCD the backlighting panel is always on; that is the reason for the relatively large power consumtion.
But per square inch they are still more energy efficient than CRTs.

Also, because of the polarizers in an LCD panel, as little as 1/5 of the light generated by the backlight actually makes it through the panel as light to reach your eyes. The rest is absorbed internally and radiated as heat.

i'm using a 27" samsung as a computer monitor.

right now it has the windows XP icon as a screensaver.

anybody know about how much energy that uses ?

when the monitor has the XP desktop, it lights up the whole
room. i can see how that consumes about 170 watts.

my samsung 17" was 40 watts on, about 4 watts in "sleep" mode.
