Why is my HD blinking on and off despite of HD activity...

... something weird here and I don't seem to be able to fix it. My HD led blinks on and off on a cycle of one blink every 1 sec. approx. independent of my HD activity. In fact when the HD is busy reading and writting the light doesn't even flicker in sync with the HD. The blinking is constant and NEVER stops during the time the computer stays on.

I flipped the HD connector on my MOBO but that didn't fix anything; it only stopped the led from working at all which tells me that the way I have it set up now is the ONLY way the connector should be stay. I played around with my BIOS but didn't see anything remote to what my problem is... I have an ABIT KR7A-133 with an AMD XP 1900+. I have two HD's on a Promise Technology PCI Ultra IDE controller. The controller on my MOBO which a believe is a High Point Tech is disabled ( I did that through the BIOS set-up) because of a compatibility issue.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? It's not a critical error and the system seems stable so far; I just thought it was weird and unatural...

Thanks a lot!

2 of my boxes do it as well. I found an old thread from several months ago indicating that Lite-On burners create the blinking hd led. Try unplugging your burner and see if it stops.

It doesn't hurt anything or use any resources. just annoying. I don't even notice it any more.

I have an LITE-ON burner... that might just be the answer. Thanks so much for the tip. I would just want to see the led light up when the HD is ACTUALLY doing something the way it's suppsed to but so far it's bliking along w/o any reason. Oh, well...

Thanks again!

Try reversing the position (+ and - on the HDD to motherboard connector) LED's only work one way, the other way won't hurt anything, but they just don't work.

Mine blinks too... and I have a Lite-on burner... but it slows down when I'm not playing music... altho I have an audigy and plenty ram... dont see why miniscule transfer of data for music would cause it blink.
