Every now and then, my hard drive (IBM Deskstar 34GXP) will be chugging along in Windows when all of a sudden it stops, spins down, spins back up again, and then continues to chug along.

Anyone have an idea why it is doing this?

Thanks

Time to back up your DATA now! "chug" noise may indicate HD failure soon. (according many discussion from varies BBS site)

Yup, back up your data and run the drive fitness tools from the site of the manufacturer to see what's wrong with the drive.

Well, you may want to check your power options.(control panel>power options)

Your harddrive may just be going into sleep mode and waking back up.

I've got a SCSI IBM drive (forget the model number) on my one Sun here at work and it does that. I sounds like it stops and restarts at random times. It does it quite frequently.

This is a refurbished replacement for one that died too!

This drive isn't used for anything critical, so I've just let it go (I have more imporant things to work on). But if it were my pesonal drive, I'd be on the phone with IBM just as soon as I back everything up!
