Why is my hard drive beeping?

I recenly got a hard drive from an old computer and I stuck it in as a slave in my computer and the IDE detecting page of the start up just sits there... then the hard drive beeps a second long beep that sounds like a really small car horn - imagine a buggy beeping. It sounds funny.

So why is it doing this? Maybe needs to be low level formated? It is a western digital (im pretty sure) 20 gigs.

I'm not sure that HD's do beep. It sounds like an error being reported by the motherboard. If you can find a manual for your motherboard it should tell you what the different beeps mean.

Check your cables again, and make sure that the jumpers for the motherboard are in the correct position. You will want to set it so it is a "slave" hard drive.

Yeah I will consult my manual.... The beep just didnt sound like one from my motherboard, so I thought it was the HD. hahaha

some...mainly older HDDs have speakers . . i've seen em/heard em . . What it means, I'm not sure of off hand . . =
but then again, motherboard/case speakers also can make any tone you want them too really.

Well he did say it was a 20gb HD, so it could indeed be one of the old ones he's speaking about. I will try to see if I can find any information about these HD's online, and what that beep code means...
