Why is my external monitor on laptop doing this?

Basically I have the secondary monitor set up on Windows as "extend my desktop to this monitor". But what happens is that the picture on screen is about a couple inches to the right. And the empty space is just black. I can't move my mouse over to the black space either.

The position settings on the monitor only resolve the problem very little, there is still a lot of black space.

Is the actual image complete? Meaning if you put like a 1024 pixel wide image on that screen full-screened, does the entire image appear or is part of it cut off? It sounds basically just like what happens when you change resolutions and/or refresh rates with any CRT, you have to adjust the size and position settings on the monitor to properly use the whole screen (at least the first time you use those resolution/refresh settings).

Can we assume it works fine on other machines? Have you tested it with various resolutions, and in both "clone mode" and extended desktop mode?

Knowing it's an LCD makes a big difference of course. Are you running it at the native resolution? Depending on the driver settings, if you run less than native resolution it may not scale, but that doesn't sound like the problem if the image isn't complete. What kind of video chip?

ati 9600 pro for laptops vcard. Dell 2001FP is running at native res. The problem is also still there with clone mode. 🙁 🙁 🙁
