i have a 12x toshiba m1402 dvd drive. i can only get it to rip at like 6x for real dvds..and for dvd-rs, it only rips it at like 2x. what gives? i tried looking for drivers, but couldnt find any

DVD-ROM drives and CD-ROM drives do not rip at the same speed that they can read at. Ripping requires more work and overhead than simple reading. Your speeds are fine, and probably normal.

Also all ripping software is not created equal. Some software uses a large amount of error correction to get the highest amount of quality possible and to compinsate for scratches and stuff.

Other software doesn't do this and can read it much faster. Some software just sucks and is slow

Also different drives are more or less capable of doing this sort of work then others and that's not always reflected in the x4 or x6 ratings.

Actually the reason is cause it is a toshiba....Many of the toshiba dvd-rom drives were locked to a 2x dvd-rip through the firmware....12x is a read speed and has nothing to do with dvd-rip speeds....

These rip speeds can fluctuate greatly from programs, media type, format (ie dual layer vs single layer), etc.....BUt for the most part if you seem to max out at 2.0x then it is what I described above....

That is why hands down the best dvd-rom on the market still remains to be the lite-on 16x dvd-rom...I hits speeds of 12x plus sometimes....
