When I open up programs, even windows explorer, it takes way longer than usual, I tried defraging but it didn't help, any ideas?

Have you recently downloaded any updates to Windows 98. When I downloaded the critical updates, I got a critical error when I rebooted. When I did get into windows, it was like someone took most of my ram away, and the system was so slow. It is an AMD 850 with 256 mb ram. I reformated the hard drive and reinstalled windows without the critical updates and I am cruising along again.

if you haven't found a virus then look in device manager to see if there are any yellow exclaimation marks & under performance to see if you're using compatibility mode!

ARe you saying it was fast, but all of a sudden became slow? Or has it always been slow? Is DMA enabled?

I think the desktopfells alot more slower when I have Active desktop set to show desktop as webbpage. Customize is way faster , well it fels like that anyway. try to right click on desktop then choose active desktop and the choose customize. Maybe U go like this already but I think the desktop gets much faster this way.
