Why is my computer locking up with youtube?!

Ok, ok; I've been frustrated with the problem for quite a while now. My PC (specs below) hard locks when I watch youtube videos! I can play HD games all day long, stream 1080p video from my local server, and whatever else I want to do with absolutely ZERO issues. But for some reason when I watch youtube videos, it will randomly hard lock. It can be when I'm randomly seeking a video, viewing full screen, viewing in window mode, etc. Doesn't matter, but it will randomly lock up. I've even gone as far as removing all of my extensions in Chrome to no avail. Temps are good in the system so I'm lost. I had this problem and then installed a brand new Samsung Evo SSD and even with a fresh install of Windows 7 I still have this issue. Any ideas guys?

Specs:

i7 920 oc'd to 3.2ghz
6gb Corsair DDR3
Radeon HD 6790
Samsung Evo 120gb
Western Digital 500gb Green
Antec 550 watt PSU
Logitech G510 Keyboard
Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse

What happens when you stop the OC and run stock settings? Does it still lock up? You have to rule out your OC first.

A key factor that could weigh on the problem is your Internet connection and provider. What are they? Can you stream movies? Have you tried a browser other than Chrome?

Corky, that would be a negative. ISP capabilities don't hardlock computers, ever. ^^

I'm with nerp, seeing a hardlocking case and the guy insist on running with an overclock, that's not gonna roll.

Agreed, until we get confirmation that you've tried watching videos with your cpu at stock speeds then there's no point in helping further.

I have not undone the OC and tried, honestly I ruled it out as much as I could without actually doing it. In my mind a computer that can play games for hours, encode/transcode video, stream TV in any other way, etc shouldn't be having a problem playing youtube. But, whether I like it or not, it may come down to trying that. I will do that and report back.

Yes, movies are streamed regularly to via Netflix and plugins in Kodi to this computer as well as other devices in the house. And for the record, Comcast is our provider but that wouldn't cause the issue. Also of note, I have not tried another browser but this problem has been persistent throughout many updates of Google Chrome for what that's worth.

Like I said above, it doesn't make sense to me that a PC can do everything I do with it and suddenly lock up when playing a simple youtube video. I was hoping this fresh install of Windows would have eliminated the problem (residual drivers, corrupted files, etc from before) but alas it has not. I will remove the OC and report back.

Restarting now to remove OC and see what happens.

Download and burn a bootable ISO, then boot from a Puppy or FatDog Linux live CD/DVD. If the thing you are having trouble with works fine in Linux than the issue is with your software or hard drive.

Note the ISO needs to be burned as a bootable ISO image, don't just burn the file to a disk.

Since Flash is built into Chrome, make sure you don't have a separate Flash Player entry in Programs and Features. I had this problem until I removed that, it was left over from another browser.

Ok guys, tried removing the OC to no avail so I'm back at square one. For the record, I've tried stock Windows drivers as well as AMD/ATI supplied drivers for the video card as well to no avail. Any other ideas I could give at try to? Getting desperate here!

Test with a different browser. Would be interesting to see if the freezing occurs with HTML 5 as well as flash.

What OS?
What Browser?
Do you watch them from www.youtube.com?
Sometimes embedded youtube can be blocked or slowed down due to the server they are going through. For instance Youtube videos have problems in Win 10 due to the setting in the OS.

6GB may not be enough RAM depending what else is running. I am running 8gb and sometimes if I have multiple windows up it will slow down the video.

Uncheck use hardware acceleration in your browser options and then see if it locks up.
You may have to play the ATI driver lottery with your card to figure out which version it play best with.
HD6XXX isn't exactly spanking new anymore.

Make sure video card drivers are up to date.

Been there, done that.

Latest version of Chrome.

Yes I watch them from www.youtube.com

And 6gb is plenty for me, I very rarely even touch 4gb used, heck I barely break 3gb.

I will have to give that a shot, didn't think of that.

It seems sporadic as far as when it decides to stick it to me. One day I can't even make it through a video or two without it locking up and lately I've gone a couple days without it throwing fits. Just perplexing.

My only other thought is PSU and though it doesn't make sense that it would only happen with youtube videos, I've seen weirder things with flaky PSUs.

6 GB of DDR3 is not much in the RAM department. Some browsers are real hogs when it comes to that. I have 8 GB of DDR3 and I noticed that video from HULU or Youtube works best with just one browser window open using chrome.
