Why is my computer acting so retarded!

Hello everyone.

Starting about 6 months ago, my computer has been nothing but a headache!!!

(I'm almost 100% sure this is a hardware issue, so please don't move this post)

First, my system specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ w/ retail heatsink & fan
Soyo SY KT400 Dragon Ultra Platinum Ed. Motherboard
ANTEC MINI TOWER SX630II
ATI All In Wonder Radeon 8500DV
DDRAM 512MB|32X64 PC-2700 MUSHKIN

Now, a few days ago, I replaced the hard drive since my other one died. That's not the problem though...

I installed a *fresh* copy of Windows XP with noting else on my computer. As usual, I went to Windows Update and proceeded to download the updates.

Problem 1 & 2: While at the Windows Update site, the browser either freezes, or when it downloads the updates, the download stops like at 128 kb or 160 kb and doesn't continue. Also, when I try to download other files from other places on the internet, it stops somewhere in the beginning too. This is not an issue with my connection or my router because my brothers computer works perfectly fine and downloads the same stuff w/o any trouble.

So, after pulling some of my hair out, and a few more attempts, the download completed all the way on Windows Update and some other files, like my video card drivers, on the internet. But, when I tried doing it again to get a few more updates, it still froze like I mentioned above.

Problem 3: This problem also existed with my old hard drive. For some reason which I still can't figure out, half the time when I turn on my computer, it acts god awfully slow and sluggish. Now, I wouldn't be complaining about this if my computer had Windows installed on it for like 6 months w/ 100 different programs, because that is normal. But in this case, it's sluggish with *practically nothing* on it and a fresh installation of Windows! To give you an example of what I'm talking about, let's say I want to go through some of my pictures... it takes forever to load each one. Or, when I simply open IE, it takes too much time to get going and surfing is sluggish at best. Or, when I click the start menu, I can see the menus coming up at slow speeds. And the hard drive is unnecessarily (sp?) being used for whatever purpose. You know what I'm talking about.

And, what I have found out is that if my computer is acting like this and I put it on standby for like a second and then come back to Windows, it acts normal (is some cases)! What gives? What the hell is causing this sluggishness half the time? It's not like it's all the time, it's about HALF!

My only explanation for this is faulty hardware. It is either my CPU, MB, Video Card, and/or RAM. I'm thinking it may be my CPU. What are acceptable temperatures for my CPU? Mine runs at about 50-65 C. Should I get a better heatsink and fan and trash the retail one?

Can anyone PLEASE shed some light onto this situation. This system is not even a year old. :(

Anyone have similar experiences?

Please help.

Jon

It does sound like software, but I dont really care where you post.

windows update website has been under a denial of service attack from several worms in the past week or 2, it's probly why you cant get the files sometimes.

sluggishness...

hit ctrl-alt-del and check out your processes when it's slow. see what using the processor is being used by.

also have you run any antivirus? updated defs?

this month has been one of the worst months in history for viruses.

I had a problem on a new build with similar symptoms once and it was because in the BIOS I had forgotten to set "Video Initialize First" to AGP. It was still set to PCI.

Don't know why this caused so many wierd problems, but it acted like it caused a memory leak and things would get slower and slower until a reboot.

Good Luck.

To correct a few things about my above post...

The downloading issue is actually a problem with my router most likely. I'm using my brothers computer right now and Windows Update is acting messed up on his computer too (it wasn't before). Also, when I download from other websites, it stops in the middle of it. The moral of this story is that the Linksys BEFSR41 sucks. :) I got a Netgear which I have yet to install, so hopefully that will eliminate the downloading problems.

As for the sluggishness, I will check my bios for that setting TD770777.

Thanks for the help.

There are thousands of the linksys routers out there and very few cause any problems and I have never heard of a problem
like the one you describe. just take the router out of the line and connect directly and see if that helps.

Blaster worm messing with your ISP? Does your router block the blaster worm's ports?
