I installed panaflo 80mm fans from BGmicro in case, ps, and cpu...now I can hear my HDD screaming. It has a high pitch whine, not to be confused with the sound it makes when the drive is being accessed. What can I do?
usually a 5400 RPM will be much quieter than the 7200 ones. Since I'm assuming you dont wanna go out and buy a new hard drive, try this.
Get some dynamat and cut it up into rectangular shapes. Just apply them on the cages holding the hard drive. This should reduce some vibrations and calm that high whining pitch.
Spend $80 and get a 40 gig Barricuda IV hard drive. This one is 7200 rpm with liquid bearings and runs at an extremely quiet 22db. This drive is virtually inaudible in my dynamat enhanced case.
Other than that.. there's not much u can do to quiet a hard drive.. i tried dynamat first and it doesn't do a whole lot.

Actually, Maxtor sells drives with liquid bearing now as well.
