A serious answer... the color of the substrate has nothing to do with anything. It seems it's just whatever could be had the cheapest that could get the job done. They started out green... then a lot of brown ones appeared... then some green ones came back, then most of the higher end Athlon XP's have been brown... now it looks like they're using green again.

I just got a 3000+ Retail CPU today from newegg, and it is brown, replacing the green retail 2700+ that was in place.

I got 2 green 1700+'s and 1 brown one. The brown one is the better one of the three, so I would say BROWN IS COOLEST!

I just got a 2500+ Barton today... It was green. Green is cooler. Anyone know what it ought to look like, I just want to know they actually gave me the right one?

well...
#1 the box will say 2500+ in the upper left corner (supposing its retail)
#2 the core will appear loooonger than a regular thoroughbred core, or shorter and wider than the older palomino XPs
#3 look at the black label on the chip, it should say 2500 on the first row below where it says AMD ATHLON

Well there's no box, but it is definately longer. Also now I'm not sure about the color... But it is definately longer and less wide than the Pal.

Yea Palomino was near square, similar to the Thunderbird line before the Athlon XP series...
Then Thoroughbred A came out, it was just a rectangle
Then Thoroughbred B was SLIGHTLY longer than TbredA as they improved on the design
Now Barton is longer because of the additional 2 L2 banks and awesome-looking as hell!
