Why is my 3dmark 2001 score so low?

All,
I did a comparison to other people using the same CPU and video card I have, and my score is much lower. My current score is 13066, and people are getting scores over 15,000 with similar hardware. Also, doing a CPU comparison, the listing for 2.7ghz is 18% higher than my CPU, yet I am at 2.72ghz. I'm confused as to where the problem lies.

Pentium 4 2.26 @ 2.72 (17*160)
512mb Corsair XMS DDR3200 Set to 4:5, 2/2/5/2, and Enhance Performance
Radeon 9700 Pro (not overclocked - Yes I know I'd get a slightly better score if I did)
Abit BG7 motherboard - newest BIOS
Newest Intel application accelerator, ATI Drivers, and Intel chipset drivers.

Some of my Sandra scores:

Memory Bandwidth: 3117
3121
CPU Multi-Media: 10744
13458
CPU Arithmetic: 5259
1425/3328

I've tried both manually setting the sliders towards performance in the ATI display applet, and also leaving it set to "application preference" regarding FSAA, and the like. I would appreciate any feedback you guys could offer. Thank you.

Most 'other ' people are also tweaking the system a lot too. Don't rely on *just* 3DMark though, test Jedi Knight2 and UT2003 scores cos you probably get equal or maybe higher scores then those 'other' people in real games. These 'other' people normally tweak the card for *just* 3DMark and so are cutting corners elsewhere....

PS. If that's the score straight out of the box - I'd be very pleased!

13,000 does seem quite low for that setup... hell, look at my config and my score. One thing you might check is that Anti-Aliasing and Ansiotropic filtering are actually disabled. I'm using an nVidia card, but it might be true for ATI too... in the settings for the video card, I set them to "3x" AA, and 8x Ansi no matter what the program wants. That would override 3DMark's request to turn off AA and Ansio... at first I was getting scores in the 5,000 range, then that hit me... so I checked and I had Fog Table emulation on, 4x AA, and 8X ansio. Now that those are turned off for the test, I get over 10,500. I turn them back on for games because I don't really need 150-200 fps in my games that I get with them off... and the visual quality is worth settling for 85 fps =) Which is what I strive for in everything since that's the refresh rate of my monitor at 1024x768.
Also double check and make sure V-Sync is turned off, I don't know if that's an option with ATI cards cause I've never owned one, but that option doesn't allow your fps to exceed your refresh rate of your monitor, which is ok in games, but bad for benchmarking.

*EDIT* One more thing... all the overclocking I've done on my system (CPU @ 1540 from 1466, and Video Card at 280/540 from 250/444) is done without any unusual cooling. I have the stock cooling fan on the Gainward video card, which doesn't even have heatsinks on the RAM, and I have an aluminum heatsink with a 70mm 4500 RPM fan on the CPU. Although I've got a copper heatsink from newegg coming in the mail for when I get either a T-Bred revision B with a 333 Mhz bus, or one of those highly overclockable XP1600's from newegg.

:disgust: At least you're getting above 10,000 on 3DMark2001. My ATI Radeon 7500 AGP with my AMD Duron 1.2Ghz barely hits 3500.

My 3dmark score is low because i have a crappy P4.

I'll be putting my p4 stuff up for sale and going back to AMD again. not really too fond of this stuff.

i got 11,500 with my XP1800 stock and 12,500 with a 1.8 @ 2.7. (only difference is board and CPU) not impressive.

not basing my only reason to sell on the 3dmark score, just FYI.

What kind of video card do you have? As most of us know (perhaps including yourself) that you can only take a video card so far. If I had my old viper 550, I would get the same score with an AMD 1800 as with a p4 @ 2.7 ghz. Make sure you take that into consideration, my friend. "Crappy p4" is funny to me because the performance I get on this machine blows the doors off my old amd 1700+. There absolutely is no comparision. However, I am running at more than 1ghz faster! 😀 Another thing to consider is overall system performance, as well. I can't see how you could be wanting to go back to AMD. As cool (relatively speaking) as the p4 runs, compared to the AMD, I'll take my p4. This is coming from a person who had Intel, then AMD, then Intel again. I would bet that an AMD 2500 wouldn't even beat my performance. Just my $.02, of course.

Nokiadude,
Sorry man, that score is just terrible. My friend had an geforce2 mx200, with a duron 700 and got just shy of 3k. From what I can see, I think that your RAM is hurting you, as well as your CPU. The vid card should allow a MUCH higher score.

You never did say what your "performance" is... check out benchmarks on anandtech.com to find out what CPU is actually better. The real answer is, none are any better than others. AMD thumps Intel in some areas, and Intel thumps AMD in some area. It just depends what you wanna do with your computer, and how much money you have to spend. AMD gives the most bang for the buck, but Intel does hold the performance crown right now with it's HT enabled CPU's.

*EDIT* By the way, Intel's 3.06 Ghz HT enabled CPU can't even keep up with an XP2800 in some areas. See?

And I still say it was a HUGE blunder by AMD to go to that stupid rating system. They should have stuck with Mhz and worked on ramping their CPU speeds like Intel has been doing. Any AMD CPU will spank an Intel CPU of equal Mhz.

I also think it's funny that even an AMDXP1800 with a Radeon 9700 Pro only scores 1000 3DMarks higher than my rig =)
