Why is my 1800 XP Unstable when not overclocked?

I have:
1800 XP
MSI K7T266 Pro
Radeon LE 32 MB
512 MB DDR

When I choose bios defaults my system runs at 1.15 Ghz. It chooses a 100 Mhz bus instead of 133 Mhz. My system is stable when I run it this way.

When I override that (but leave everything else at auto) and set the bus to 133 Mhz, I run at 1.53 Ghz. It's stable for a while, but I seem to freeze often, or get the BSOD. I was installing VMWare and every time it would freeze up. When I went back to 1.15 Ghz, it would work just fine.

Does anyone know what I can check? I just bought this system, and I know I should be able to run stable at 1.5 Ghz! My CPU temp is always about 110-117 degrees. Doesn't seem to overheat. What else can I try?

Up the core voltage to 1.8 or 1.85v. try running a 2.7 DDR voltage as well.

Do you have PC2100 RAM or Just PC1600?

If you do have PC2100 it my be low quality and it might not even run at its rated speed.

If you have 2 DIMMs take one out and see if it works, then try the other one.

I had a similar problem recently when I was building a new system for someone. It turned out that the ram was faulty, surprising given it was crucial stuff...
