Why is Morpheus not illegal while Napster is?

I don't think Napster is "illegal", they were just shut down/filtered 'cuz of the RIAA lawsuit.

So if the RIAA come for Morpheus, they would have to do the same thing napster is doing right now? That kinda bites.

Unless Morpheus doesn't use centralized servers like Napster did. I have no clue whether or not they do, but if there's no one party to go after it makes it kinda difficult to shut down.

;)

Also, the software itself is not illegal. The part that was illegal was enabling people to share copyrighted material.

Napster is a client to server type of program. I don't know about Morpheus, but I now use iMESH and it's a client to client program (you download stuff directly form someone's else's computer and not from a centralized computer) I would guess that Morpheus works somewhat the same as iMESH

ALL of the file sharing programs where you download programs from other people are basicly the same. They ALL have a central server of sorts. If there wasnt a central server, you couldn't do dick with the program. This server just tells you who is on and such, but you don't download from it. If these programs were truelly client to client you would not enjoy using them because you'd have to type in an ip address that you want to connect to everytime.

Hey rawko, every tried the Gnutella Network? Well if fact you do not need any kind of central servers at all. Mortheous (Kazaa), Gnutella, and others are true Peer to peer networks and have no central controlling servers at all. Go read the FAQ's and they specifically describe the network design.

Morpheus does in fact use a central server . . . it's the musiccity server. WinMX also logs onto this server. It's just a matter of time before morpheus is either shutdown, or starts to suck as WinMX recently has. The problem is people just want to d/l but won't share their stuff for others. I refuse to let anybody d/l off my puter that isn't sharing their own files.

Is it me, or does Morpheus access the same servers as Kazaa? The 2 of them seem identical in nature, save a few visual differences.

fandu, whatever server you connect to is your central server... A true peer to peer network does not have a server of any sort. If they were truelly peer to peer you would have to entire every ones ip that you wanted to connect to. Also, where do you think the clients get the list of servers?

Napster is caught in the flashlight of the media. Other sharing programs are nearly unknown to the general public and don't receive that much attention from the media.

Anyway, I'm glad Napster is dying. The program itself was worthless.

Elledan-

Just Curious...Why do you say the Napster Program was worthless? What more did you want it to do?

Let's see... for a start, how about auto-resume? And multi-threaded downloading, maybe even from multiple users at the same time?

Those are functions I've found in iMesh and AudioGalaxy, both excellent programs.

I've been using Napster for a few months (I even got banned for downloading Metallica songs (only 1) for a short while ;) ) and the fact that it's a complex, sometimes unstable program together with the points mentioned above made me drop Napster after a while and look for some better programs.

I can't live without auto-resume now, even though I've cable internet ;)

I quote from the Morpheous FAQ:

The Morpheus? Peer-to-Peer Application: faster, better, smarter

[*]Faster searches
[*]Pure peer-to-peer network
[*]Always Open connections to the Network
[*]More simultaneous users for better search results
[*]Self-organizing ? any outages at MusicCity will have no effect on the rest of the Network

Morpheous is not an OpenNap replacement, it's just a client onto the same P2P network that Kazaa and others use. MusicCity does not provide central servers, they just provide hubs, as could anyone with a decent connection.
Just as BearShare and LimeWire are clients onto the Gnotella network. There are no central servers, period. When I connect to the network I check the net for open servers, then they pass along a few dozen IP's that I can connect to. Then once connected to a few others, as searches and queries pass through I grab more IP's to connect to.

When I do a search it first checks the computers I am connected to, from there they pass it onto those that they are connected to and so on.

Give it time. While they kill napster slowly, they've already taken aim at Aimster (lol, pun alert). Most companies would just rather shut them down then face the messy court battle (Like scour exchange). Gnuetella looks like its going to be the best alternative to anything for a while. I've never had much luck with it, although it *is* amusing to turn on the feature that lets you see what other people are searching for. There are some SICK SICK people out there.

On that note...I wonder if zeropaid.com still has its gnuetella wall of shame for people who attempted to download kiddie pr0n...

rawko,

You have to obtain the IP address of someone already connected to others. Once that happens, then the application starts gathering the addresses of other persons connected to the network. The first address that you use is sometimes found by looking at certain web sites that list them specifically for this purpose or friends already connected.

Now stop trying to be a know-it-all wanker and behave yourself.
