Why is minecraft so appealing?

I'm not really in the mainstream loop when it come to gaming. Never care for angry bird (though flappy bird was addicting somewhat), terraria, clash of clans or other games that seem to be popular.

I don't really understand it quite frankly but when it come to creativity, I'm even worst than most girls. For example, I can't even build and design a realistic looking house in any sims game (maybe sims 4 would be different). I can't design a robot in robocraft, I absolutely blow at kerbal space program, and i didn't even know what I was doing in terraria.

So for me I don't see the appeal of it but I would like to know what the appeal of it? Obviously people don't just play minecraft because their computer can't handle better games because minecraft is play by both console and high end gamers as well. I do admit I am not a fan of indie games even though I try my hardest to enjoy some of them. There hasn't been an indie game I enjoy yet. I didn't even enjoy Trine 1 and 2, but I did finish it.

So for those who do play minecraft, why is it so enjoyable?

Thanks

i had the questionable pleasure of sitting for an hour next to a 13 year old boy with ADHD playing Minecraft. he lives for this game, he even watches hours of YouTube videos of people playing Minecraft and constantly screaming.

what he basically did in the game is jumping around (never walking straight, always jumping) collected horses, smacked a few creeps around and planted grain or whatever that was.

there was seemingly no goal he was striving for, he just did whatever popped into his head at the moment. he had a house that i think he built, and there was a portal next to the house which he went into on occasion, and it took him to a hell-type level.

i'm 31 years old, i guess this game is not for me.

Seriously? It's a fancy "adult" version of playing with blocks? Who didn't enjoy playing with blocks?

More seriously, it's more complicated than just building things. Redstone can be used as a giant Erector set for fairly complex problems which is fun for the problem solvers. You can try to find/explore The Nether. There's combat. It's multiplayer.

It's a nice, relaxing game set on a scale that many casual gamers weren't used to seeing. I played it in the very early stages and had a lot of fun. I mostly enjoyed joining public servers to see what everybody built. Sometimes you even had a large group band together to build a huge castle or something. It was fun.

I enjoyed playing with blocks - when I was a kids. But then I grew up, got a job and started earning a living. And now I can afford a computer with a nice graphics card and games that have nice polish to them.....not the Atari 2600 graphics you get with Minecraft. That's the part I just don't get....how anyone can stand to look at those graphics for hours and hours when technology can give us so much more.

Meh. To each his own.

It's just a nice open world with seemingly unlimited possibilities. There's also a lot for kids to learn if they are interested. I have middle school students who know how to set up servers and various other fairly advanced tech skills because of Minecraft.

Personally, I didn't have much fun with it. I built a house. I built a giant sign of my name, then I got bored and went back to Path of Exile. I need my slot machine ARPG...

First off, very few people play vanilla minecraft.

My kids love it. LOVE it. and for VASTLY different reasons.

My daughter is extremely creative/artistic and she spends her time in the game building incredible buildings and locations (shes actually a top admin on a very "high level" server farm)

My son on the other hand likes to play the action side of the game. Plays tons of mods (hunger games and the like) and builds more "mechanical/working" devices.

The point is the game appeals to just about EVERYONE. It's the singularly the best sandbox game that's ever been invented so it appeals to pretty much just about everyone.

That being said, I hate it.

it's a sandbox game and there's mods so you can do whatever you want
you can build all kinds of things lego style. you can get even more intricate and build things like a 3d printer in the game. you can play it as casual or as hardcore as you want. you can play it on your desktop/tablet/mobile/console.

the graphics just have their own style. some people love it and some people hate it.

Spoken like a true ignorant child. Have you ever actually sat down and played the game?

I'd take solid gameplay over fancy graphics any day.

Would you play it if there was an HD version of minecraft? Maybe like with N64 graphics? For me, it not the graphics that the problem, it the objective of such a game.

It basically Terraria in 3D.

But dudes, the graphics are so 1990!! *extreme eyeroll* No one plays that stuff, if the graphics aren't bleeding edge with no jaggies and don't require penta 980ti's there is no reason to play it!

Makes me wonder why they don't just bring back FMV games, nothing beats real life graphics :p How is someone going to complain about them if they are filmed? They'd find a way. "The camera angles are way off/The color is washed out, they used the wrong lens filter".

It is a sad state when almost every game discussion revolves around how bad graphics look, even when obviously graphics have zero to do with the obvious appeal.

Yes, actually I did give it try on Xbox 360 which is the platform my 10 year old plays on. I hated it. Hated the graphics style, hated the open sandbox world with no point to it, no story....nothing.

I'd take solid gameplay over fancy graphics any day too.....but in this day and age there is no reason gamers can't have both! And with Minecraft you definitely don't get both, even if you do enjoy the gameplay.

But hey...if demanding both good graphics and gameplay makes me an ignorant child....well I guess I'm guilty as charged.

I would have a better time accepting Minecraft if it had nicer graphics. But sandbox games with no story or objective aren't really my thing.

When I was a kid, I loved Legos. I liked following the instructions and building the kit to perfection....just like it looked on the box. I was never one to experiment and create something outside of specs.....

I don't need bleeding edge graphics. But there is no reason a game today can't have a sword look like a sword and not a jaggy hedge trimmer.

There's also no reason a game can't have their swords look like "jaggy hedge trimmers" if they want to. The main reason Minecraft looks the way it does is because it was based on Inifiniminer. It's an intentional stylistic choice.

It's clear that you are the type of player who prefers a lot of direction in their video games, so this game isn't for you. Some people just don't like or want to be creative. That doesn't make you a bad player nor does it make Minecraft a bad game.

my niece and nephew love it. they even watch videos of people playing it on youtube.

what gets me though is that when they play, they don't do anything but stupid shit. they don't build structures, they don't mine, they just run around doing whatever.

i played it for awhile several years ago but got bored with it.
