Why is Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes so expensive?

I was thinking about trading in some games at Amazon and I noticed the trade in value for Fallout 3 for the PS3 was $16.50. Damn, that's pretty low. And then I looked up the Metal Gear Solid games and I saw that The Twin Snakes for the GC was $14.00. WTF?

I really LOVED my Twin Snakes but I don't know if I should trade it in. Anyone know why it happens to be so expensive? I also looked on eBay and some of the prices for it were insane ($62.00 SEALED, $35 USED!)

Stuff that's out of print inevitably gets more expensive over time. Well, not inevitably, but the things that are out of print and are good do tend to increase in price. The sad part is that a lot of GameCube games were dirt cheap a couple years ago after the Wii came out, but now they're going back up in price. You probably could have gotten Twin Snakes for $5 or $10 a while ago but now the price is high again.

It's all about supply and demand. I was wanting to pick up Pokemon Crystal for GBC but it's selling for $40 on average on eBay. That was the original retail price even though the game is eight years old. Keep in mind that trade in values from stores like EB and Amazon don't represent a game's true value. They want to make money too and place huge markups on them. Fallout 3 used copies still retail for around $50 or more. Usually, the more popular the game, the better it holds onto its value.

I think it has something to do with collectors, and the perceived value of some older rare and sought-after games.

I remember having to shell out $40 for a used black-label (non-greatest hits) copy of SOTN not too long ago. $40 for a used 10 year old game. And black-label copies of Final Fantasy VII are quite a bit more expensive than that.

You should check out some PS1 RPG's to see what their resell values are.

For example:

Suikoden 2

I have a mint copy sitting in a drawer that I should sell.

The term you guys are looking for is Collectors Value. I went into an old game shop a while ago and saw all of these old games with a high price tag. I asked the guy why and he said they were based on collectors value. I'm not sure where they get thier values from though. But it's always the big titles like Mario and Zelda that are expensive. Also it's worth alot more if you have the box and manual. And if you have an old console with the box still, they're worth alot.

You want to see an overpriced game? Look at Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition. All it really is is the Subsistence version of the game bundled with a "movie" re-editing of the game's cutscenes in a slipcase. But it goes for $150-$250. Those who preordered it also got a second DVD, Metal Gear Saga vol. 1, and including that with the bundle pushes the price up even higher. I saw a still-unopened copy with everything for $400 (buy it now) on eBay. Keep in mind you can get the standard MGS3: Subsistence game for $10 or $20 most places.

LOL!

Sad how PC games don't go up in value for their Collector's/Limited Edition counterparts.

And I bought C&C3 Kane Edition for $50. :(

I think it's mostly because of the Hideo Kojima fanboys. Apparently, in Japan, people were buying MGS4-edition PS3s for hundreds over MSRP, which was already $100 higher than the 80GB PS3 at the time (which also had backwards compatibility with the PS2)... and the MGS4 edition was a 40GB, non-BC SKU painted gray and it didn't even ship with the game.

I'm sure there are other collectors' edition games that still command high prices, but few are as insane as limited edition Metal Gear stuff.
