why is meeting someone online (for dating purposes) thought to be strange?

think carefully before you respond, one word answers either way don't mean too much.

why are online personals considered weird? you see other profiles, talk to some people, then decide to meet to see if online feelings match up in real life. is there anything that odd about it? it seems more rational than randomly striking up conversations with people usually based on looks first and personality second.

no poll on purpose, i'd like to see reasons.
 
Because you dont know how they are in real life. They might say or do things online that are completely different in RL.
 
as humans, we have a magical space around us(extends a few feet maybe). When we click with certain people, we invite them into that space. So, when you finally meet someone, who you may think you know them very well from conversation etc, but they may not click within your space. So then we throw up barriers, and we may not even be aware of it. It's hard to explain
 
It's not the traditional way of meeting people. Also anyone online can assume any kind of persona. They can pretend as much as they want without worry of being found out. In all likely-hood, if he/she tried this in real life they most definitely will be found out.
 
As busy as the world is today,I see nothing strange in either method,hell most here use computers for just about everything else,why not to widen their dating choices?
 
seem to remember when it was considered to be strange to have an email account that you checked more than once a day too....times change
 
I don't think it is weird at all. I met a wonderful girl years ago on AIM. We dated for a year then have dated off and on since. I met a few other girls, nothing really panned out but its just one more way to meet new people. It never hurts to have another friend if things don't work out.

I don't know... there isn't much to do where I live, especially if you are under 21. As people get more connected you almost have to expect this to become common practice.

I don't think its weird at all. I wouldn't use a dating service persay, but I am not totally averse to the idea of dating someone I met off the internet, if we seemed to click well, and had talked for a while first.
 
I can't give reasons... it doesn't seem odd to me... just gotta be very particular seeing as you don't meet the person, until you agree to meet... (I guess that's how it goes)

Dudes who come off that way are usually obnoxious bores anyway,you aren't missing anything.
 
Its just cause its not the norm or really gone mainstream yet. Give it some more time. Based on personal experience, there's nothing wrong or strange about it.
