Why is McCain promising victory?

He keeps saying that he will win, I can think of a few reasons why, but it's a little odd.

Reasons:

1. Galvanize voters so they won't assume it's already over and not show

2. He really does believe he will with some sort of legitimate, non-cheating evidence

3. They're going to steal it??

4. He's out of touch with reality

what else is he supposed to say?

I'd look to see where he takes the rhetoric with this last week. If he is folding up and closing shop then he SHOULD ease up on the attacks.

if he is attacking until the last minute then maybe he knows something we dont... ?

McCain may not have a good chance to win, but he certainly still has one. If he came up to the podium and said "well guys, we're fucked... head on home" he would remove whatever small chance he has left.

What else can he really say at this point? Hopefully inside he knows it's not true.

If the fat heads who vote for him lay down for a second they will never muster the energy to lift their fat heads again to get to the polls. It's the physics of the inertia of rest.

Reason #5. Appear to keep on *fighting* in the election so he's not blamed for the (expected) loses of seats in Congress. If he looks to have given up he'll be intensely criticized by the Repub party.

To some extent, he's campaigning for all Repubs across the nation.

his demeanor and body language, as well as Palin's body language, are very telling that they do understand the race is over.

is this your first political campaign or something?

campaigns put on a brave face and force optimism right up until their candidate has to give his concession speech; it doesn't mean they're delusional or planning voted fraud, it means they're trying to get their supporters to come out and vote -- the same reason Obama keeps saying it's not over, don't count your chickens, etc, even though there's basically nothing that can get in the way of his victory.

loki I did say that on reason 1. I was just curious because I thought it a little odd that he would say he "knows" he's going to win, guaranteed

I don't know why he's using words like guarantee but he's said a lot of unreasonable things over the last year. See claim promising to balance the budget in his first term.

It is pitiful to watch him lying about the state of his campaign.

"We're doing just fine. We're gonna win."

"My vp candidate is doing a great job and I'm proud of her."

The recent 'meet the press' performance was distressing. If I didn't know he was a sell-out, I'd feel sorry for him.

well, the polls have been closing, the average is now down to a 4.5 point lead for Obama, from 6+ just a couple of days ago.

Trends are making this a much closer race.

Because he has to keep saying that, either side would have to, conceiting defeat is only done on wednesday (and sometimes later)

only if you are selectively picking and choosing your polls. the fivethirtyeight.com super tracker shows no such divergence.

It's probably the same reason that Obama told his supporters a few weeks back "not to get cocky" as the election isn't over yet. Just because he was/is ahead in the polls might get lots of people to think that they don't have to vote - thus, causing a loss of votes for him.

Which is why there's always hope of the "Bradley Effect", which could benefit McCain by a great margin.

There's also the "reverse" Bradley Effect that I read about a few days ago - and, if this were the case, McCain would lose by a major margin.

That's of course if you are only using those trackers, if you ignore Gallup's other tracker that they publish, and ignore all the other polls that have happened.

If you don't do that you will see that Obama's lead has steadily fluctuated between about 6 and 8 points for quite some time now.

He's just speaking empathetically for mccain. It's a repug trait. Always defend a fellow repug even when they're wrong.
