Why is marijuana still a Schedule 1 drug?

I have tried to think of why the government labels cannabis as this (a drug with no medicinal uses), when so many people use it for its medicinal uses. It is just so crazy. Its medical uses are obvious and have been backed up by loads of reasearch as well. Here is a site that has testimonials about people who use the herb for its medicinal purposes.

BTW, im not trying to start any "should weed be legal" topics, just wanted to discuss why it is classified like this.

No. And even though you didn't want to start it, it should be legal, just like every other drug.

I'm not sure that the FDA has actually approved it for any medicinal applications.

That could be one reason.

(I could be wrong)

Well I totally agree with you :)

Also, that synthetic "THC" pill is complete BS

Amish- Well it obviously isn't or else it pribly wouldn't be a schedule 1 drug. The FDA KNOWS that is has medicinal purposes.

Well, the FDA knows a lot of things. That doesn't mean they act accordingly. I work for a pharmaceutical company and have to deal with the FDA's regulations everyday.

You asked why it's CI and I gave you your answer. It'll be a long time until the FDA approves it for human consumption.

There is too much lobby support and money in keeping it illegal right now.
Petroleum industry is one of the leading supporters in keeping it illegal as long as possible. If it did ever get legalized, they would lose SO MUCH cash.
Would be devistating for them.
Frankly, I can't wait to see that day.

Sammy... please elaborate... why would petroleum become more expensive if marijuana is legalized?

I would guess the reason is the term "herb." I don't think herb's are supported by the FDA as medicine...I know that the majority of herbs aren't FDA approved. Not sure though. I would have to do some research to find out.

:)

Hemp oil and be manufactured to burn properly in combustion engines.
Hence, $1 a barrel oil.

I agree with grim.

As "Deep Throat" said, "Follow the money." It's because the liquor lobby has spent a lot to promote the idea that cannibis is the same kind of addictive, destructive narcotic as heroin (remember "Reefer Madness?), and they've spread a lot of money among our legislators to get it criminalized and keep it that way.

The main reason that it is illegal today is because before the release of the first gas burning cars, hemp oil was supossed o be used as fuel. Well Dupont was a money hungry lovely human and lobbied against cannabis and made it illegal so he could become a rich man from oil.

Do a bit of surfing on the Harrison Act and, later, the career of Harry Anslinger who used his war against marijuana to further his career. Any hope of rational cannabis/hemp related legislation was destroyed when the '60s convinced folks that it made people into hippies.
