Why is Leopard so much slower then Vista/XP with the internet?

I have this Gateway laptop with Vista on it. Web surfing is pretty quick in Firefox.

When I use my Macbook with Safari, gmail takes so long to load and some webpages fail.

I'm in a 128 kb connection... that's what my dorm offered because they price gouge.

Even when I use a VM in Leopard it is faster then Leopard itself.

Eh... something is wrong with your setup then. Are you wired or wireless. Explain your connectivity setup some more. What happens when you open gmail with firefox?

I can see where he's coming from. Honestly, Internet Explorer seems so much faster than Safari at practically everything. It's not BAD, but it is notcieable when I flip over to Windows. Hopefully Safari 4's rendering improvements will fix some things, but I don't think it's going to fix the Flash implementation. Flash is really, really bad.

My usenet services download at 128 mbps (yes, MEGAbits per second) in Windows XP, but I can barely sustain 90 mbps in Leopard. I can't say that Leopard is the cause since this IS a hackintosh, so I'm just going to leave it as a simple observation.

I don't know. I know that speed wise, the internet is pulling the same speeds down in Windows that I see in OS X.

i notice it too on my dads macbook and on my hackintosh. xp with ie7 or firefox is WAY faster than safari/camino/firefox in osx.

IE is integrated with the OS. you can't even uninstall it.

That means absolutely nothing. IE itself is just a shell around the rendering engine in MSHTML (I think it's called Trident) which is included with the OS and used by other parts of it (i.e. anything that renders HTML) but it's no more integrated than any other shared library.

I ran a test, not particularly scientific, since the hardware between the two is off... but I put Firefox 3 onto both my desktop and laptop. On first ever launch, Firefox 3 launched faster on my MacBook. Once they were both at the welcome screen, i took them to gizmodo.com. They either got there at the same time, or very very close to it.

You are right buddy, There are some known issues with wired/wireless on mac. Your browsing speeds are slow compared to windows. With Apple router it is little faster but not significantly.

The other option on the other forums suggested to change the DNS servers in the mac network preferences to open DNS servers. This helped me a lot and I have good speeds after that. Still Windows get the prize of speedy browsing. Even ubuntu wins prize here.

I am not trying to start a endless debate of mac vs PC or something like that.

I have my router set to some fast dns servers, but browsing on the mac is still slower than windows. Not significantly, and i don't notice it until i boot in to windows and surf around for a while. I think even my VM goes through pages faster than Safari.

I've not tried FF3, because honestly, I hate loading browsers seperately unless i have soime specific need for it. I used firefox on windows all the way up to the release of IE7, but once IE7 came out, I switched back to it. I used FF only for tabs.

Now, if someone could also explain why my MBP's speakers are SIGNIFICANTLY louder in Windows than they are in OSX, I'd be pretty happy.

I have noticed the same thing with the speakers on my MacBook. I wonder if it is some sort of OS side volume limiter that does that. Because I can definitely make things louder in VLC since it can apparently crank to 400% volume.

I want to be shocked. I really do.

My sense of amazement doesn't go that high yet🙁

I've never noticed this with newer computers at all, but with older ones it's pretty apparent. My 3-year old Powerbook on 10.5 is WAY slower online than my 5-year old Athlon 2400+ running XP. Everything from iGoogle to YouTube to Anandtech, it's very noticeable.
