Why is knowledge spelt with a "k"?

That is sooooo stupid. I have a good mind to start saying "kuh-nowledge" from now on!

If they new any better it would be spelt 'nawledge.

Not to mention the fact that it's not "new", it's "knew". They created the English language this way to weed out the complete idiots.

Sorry, you failed that test a long time ago.

No amount of schooling could take Felix out of the idiots group.

I knew someone would rag me for stating the obvious. Damn you. 🙂

At one time it was pronounced that way. In fact, as Chaucer wrote "knight" it was most likely pronounced "kuh-nig-hut;" every word enunciated.

After a while the k on such words became silent. But we retain the etymological spelling of "knowledge" from Middle English:

knoulech from "knouen" (to know) + "lech" (noun suffix)

I would venture a guess that knowledge is spelled with a "k" because it's the noun form of the word "know". If we spelled "know" without a "k", we'd have a totally differrent word now, wouldn't we? 😀

English has to be the strangest language in the world.

Example: why do we call it a "hot water heater"? Does it make any sense that you would want to heat hot water?

Also, "spelt" isn't even a word. "Spelled" is the correct past tense of "spell."

Get over it fool. Why is knife spelled with a "k"? Why is honor spelled with an "h"? Learn the language and accept it's quirks or just come to grips with the fact that you are are a complete dumbass.

I beg to differ. It's a perfectly valid question that can be answered (see above). Sure it's a quirk of the language but that doesn't mean you can't ask why it is so.

The correct explanation.

At one time people cut their food (or each other) with "kuh-nives"

Ruined Anandtech?

Bwhahahahahah....

What on Earth are you talking about? Because some happen to think you're a troll?

I reserve harsh comments for a very few select people, and you just happen to be one of them.. you have displayed your ignorance more than a few times.

Now quit PMing me with stupid sh!t that has nothing to do with the topic at hand trying to start a PM-war.

I often wonder why silent letters are put at the beginning of words too. It's just the way our language is though. Saying it with the K pronounced will only make you look stupid. It won't be proving a point, so you might as well just say it the way it's meant to be said.
