Why is it that things like clevage are allowed and not censored, but it's only the nipples that are censored?

Everything around it seems to be shown on tv all the time, but it's that one little spot that once exposed must be censored....why/where did they come up with that? sounds random to me...

Just common sense regarding decency although I don't approve of cleavage either.

There are other, less censored sources for porn, you know :p

lol, i'm just curious where/why/how the media came to that conclusion that everything around it is fine, but the nipples themselves are not allowed. It's like sitting on the fence and not taking either side.

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!

P.S. - Without cleavage, your mom couldn't feed you as a baby, unless you were fed with a bottle and formula.

acutally, its only the nipple that they can't show. they can show the rest of the breast.

It doesn't make any sense. Not sure what your looking for here.

This is why America sometimes really pisses me off. Have you ever seen a "Zest Fully Clean" commercial in Europe? The ones here can be just as sensuous, and yet they pull the camera right before the areola/nipple, when they're exposing everything else. Pointless.

They probably didn't come to that conclusion, someone probably pushed as far as they could and until enough people raised hell. Then they pulled back a little to make them quite.

In Canada we get have a show called Fashion Television, and the models regularly show nipple.

Also in Toronto in the '80s CityTV had soft porn on friday nights, and this was on public airwaves.

Commonsense is often wrong. Does not the definition of "decency" vary from culture to culture?

Bleh as far as I'm concerned there's no need to censor stuff nearly as much as they do now on US TV. Everybody has seen bare naked breasts before, hell it's probably one of the first things you see, right after a vagina anyway. ;)

As far as language... I think most parents would probably be surprised if they knew just how young their kids are when they start hearing their first "bad words"
Personally I still can't believe it when I look back and what I did or saw done when I was younger... then look at the kids that age today and think sheesh... damn they look like little kids, while in the back of my head I'm thinking... and odds are they're humping like rabbits after school.

I'm sure it's "community standards" or some such thing. If you see a woman out in public wearing a low-cut shirt or something, you probably wouldn't think twice about it (well, you might, but at least it's not out of place ;) ). Now, suppose this same woman was going topless - people just don't do that here really...it isn't "decent", I suppose. :p

In any case I agree with you that it is rather random...

That's why Canada is cool.

Just what is it about the nipple that is so offensive?

And why is a male nipple considered less offensive than a female nipple? (That is the social standard, but what is the logical basis for it, if any?)

Agreed. Give examples of both please.
If I wasn't at work I'd be so tempted to post a censored pic of a nude woman, then an uncensored pic of some cats nipples or something. :p

i believe that's the way the FCC chose to define topless exposure on TV. the networks pushed it to the edge as far as it would go which became showing everything but the nipple. that''s the de facto rule now. that's why sometimes you'll see some magazines or movies edit nipples out from the side view. its the difference between indecent and decent in the eyes of the FCC.

I've kinda wondered this too. Makes you wonder how much male genitalia they'd get away with showing.
