Why is it that some OS' don't support my chipset yet Win9x does? :(

I have a dx2 (or dx4, whatever) chipset as most of you know (if you know I have a p83).

Linux and Windows NT do not work, at all. BeOS' list of supported hardware doesn't include mine, so I'm assuming it doesn't work either.

What's up with that??? It's not fair, I'm STUCK with Windows 🙁

DX2 or DX4 are not chipsets.....that refers to the processor. Some 486 Processors were denoted with these numbers, ie DX2/66 or DX4/75, indicating speed and presence of FPU.

In this case, I assume that you have a 486 class motherboard. Hhmm...that will complicate things, as there were a lot more chipset companies around in those days.

The best way to tell is to open up the machine and have a look.

Possibilities are Intel, VIA, SiS, Opti, and maybe a few others.

What's wrong with Win9x anyway?

AndyHui is right about the DX2 and DX4 not being chipsets.

What is the problem exactly. What happens when you try and install Linux for example?

Some Linux distributions do not support processors below Pentiums because of the way the kernel they come with is compiled. Creating your own boot disk and then recompiling the kernel after the install should allow you to run even these distributions.

Linux will run fine on a 486 with 16MB if you run it with out X (No Windowing environment). At least 32 MB is needed for X, with 64MB recommended for a newer window manager.

ya ya, Win98 is only "acceptable" with 96MB RAM, but I run it just fine with 24MB... but anyways.

Ok, thanks for pointing out the chipset thing... yeah, I knew that... back when I originally had my 486 🙂 I seem to have forgotten all about it.. lol

Well its probably Opti, since the model name is "OptiPlex 466/Le".

Optiplex 466/LE is the name of a line of older Dell computers. After a quick lookup, I'm guessing your computer originally had a 486 60mhz or 66mhz and 16MB RAM. Knowing Dell I'm pretty sure it has an Intel chipset.
