Why is it that if I sleep _exactly_ 6.5 hours, I wake up fine but any more I can't even get out of bed?

If I set my alarm exactly 6.5 hours after I get into bed, I can function all day perfectly after rolling out of bed with no difficulty.

If I set my alarm for 7 hours after I get into bed, I can barely get out of bed, feel like crap all morning, and can't function much past the early afternoon.

Anyone have a clue?

old enough to not be able to sleep in class anymore (which used to be my workaround for this little problem).

is this a theory, the older you become, the less hours of sleep you get?

less melatonin is produced in older people, which makes them sleep less.

Oh teh noes! I'm screwed when I get older. I get about 6 hours a night now and I'm in my early 20's.

This is more of a long term thing, but if I try to sleep too much on a continual basis I'll end up having trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, and generally not getting a very restive sleep.

~6 hours seems like just the right amount of time that I can fall right asleep and stay asleep every night.

6-7 hours of sleep does it for me. Any more than that and I wake up before my alarm and feel tired all day. Any less than that and I fall asleep in class (not matter how har di try not to) and have trouble focusing while driving.

I think the above REM comment is true. Sleep cycles are about 3 hours long IIRC. You can actually sleep fine on 3, 6, or 9 hours, but in between you get shafted. I tested the 3h once, and I was fine. It was really weird.

I thought cycles were closer to 1.5 hours. So yea, 3, 6, or 9 hours would definitely work, but so would 4.5 and 7.5. I sleep about 6 hours per night, but 6.5-7 hours makes me feel like dump.

Maybe that's it. I pulled it out of my ass :-D 6-7 works for me, 7.5 is poison. I usually get 5-6 a night.

I thought they were more like 3 myself. I dunno. OP should try 9 hours and 45 minutes and see how he feels.

regardless, it's hard to plan how many hours you will actually sleep, at least if you are like me... I can never seem to predict how long it will take me to finally fall asleep once I lay down in bed. My mind is almost too active still, even if I am tired. And add to that the fact that every now and then, I'll wake up in the middle of the night. And I really need to figure out a proper cycle, because some days it is really required that I stay attentive all day. Thankfully, I think I can be as tired as I can be on M,W,F afternoons and still stay awake, because the sensory overload of Russian attacking my mind helps me stay awake.. scared and confused, but awake. lmao
However, I really want to be able to be rested and alert in the mornings, especially since I have PT 3 days a week that requires me to wake up even earlier. Thankfully I have coffee to help me get through the day, but that's in the morning and I want to avoid pop and energy drinks as much as possible (although I do invest in caffeine pills for that extra help in the middle of a long day, thankfully haven't used them but I have only been in class for 2 days now).
