Why is it that blue collar installers/workers are such dicks

I've been trying to get internet service installed at my new place and it seems that the world is full of idiots. Any deviation from the norm (a new installation to a new house) causes everything to break down - from cablevision not being able to tell me when or if an installer can come to my home to Verizon's installer claiming that they stopped by and no one was home, even though I made special arrangements to make sure that someone would be home.. Why are people so lazy and, honestly, how do they get away with it for so long?

Another thing that's driving me bat shit crazy is that no company can contact their workers - for example, the installer said that no one was home and verizon said they would have to reschedule installation for next week.. I asked them to call the installer and have him go back.. Get this.. VERIZON DOESN'T HAVE HIS NUMBER! They're the nations largest telecommuncations provider and they have no way of getting in touch with their workers..

This shit is driving me insane.

Update
1. Apologies to the blue collar workers who helped build America. I was stressed out and said some rude things and put blame in the wrong direction. Some people are lazy, regardless of the color of their collar :)

2. Verizon executive customer service earned some major props for scheduling a priority install for Saturday, even though every other customer service agent claimed that installs could only be done M-F,8-5. I protested since I hated the idea of having to take time off from work due to their screw up, and exec customer service actually listened to that complaint and made arrangements to work with me. Right on time, a verizon installer (not a contract worker) showed up and spent 2 hours working on the project. He said it wasn't an easy job but didn't give up, going above and beyond. We gave him a nice tip and I called Verizon Executive customer service back today to thank them and to request that my kudos be forwarded to the installer's immediate supervisor...

In the end, it was one dickishly lazy installer, but the rest of the company went above and beyond to resolve the issue, once I called the right person.

Sorry man, I got the munchies on the way over and stopped @ Taco Bell. After eating, I forgot where you lived, so I called it a day.

I employ a lot of tradespeople in my business and it is very hard to find someone who is both good at the trade and good at dealing with people. That and there is definitely a work ethic problem with many younger people that I don't generally see in my older (40+) employees.

It's kind of wacky that they use what seem to be independent contractors. Time Warner does this and when we needed new cable boxes some dude showed up in a beat up old pickup with some small sign stuck to his truck. He was early so it was cool.

I think they know they'll get paid anyway somehow.

0/10. I gave you a point for having somewhat of a point (even though the execution was quite poor), but I took it away for you not being able to spell your thread title.

Topic Title: Why is it that blue collar installers/workers are so asanine?

Because the customers are such dickheads most of the time...

Everyone seems to think each install should take x minutes, so scheduling installs to within a 15 minute period should be easy. If it was only that simple. All too often, some dammed thing causes the install to take far longer than expected, or traffic is all fucked up, or lunch/coffee break get in the way...not to mention all the hot housewifes who are bored and want to boff every installer that shows up... (well, according to the "documentaries" I've seen anyway) :D

Like you, I've bitched and complained over the years about the phone installer, the cable installer, the electrical serviceman, the gas company repairman, the Sears repair guy, etc...and it never makes any difference...so rant away...

BUT, remember, scheduling installs to a certain timeframe isn't always accurate due to the many reasons I listed above...and more.

Topic Summary: And why is it so hard for their supervisors to reach them?

Usually because the installers are independent contractors, or work for a 3rd party contractor, so Verison or whatever company do not have their phone numbers. Unless the company is paying for my cell phone, I don't give them my number.

lol, and those blue collar workers on the automotive line most likely make more money than you, are happier, get better benefits, better retirement, won't work as long in their life AND have more time off.

How's that for reality? Has it set in yet?

I had a young (late teens/early twenties) guy that arrived late for work with an amazing excuse.

His girlfriend had detention and this joker was her only ride home.

He was ridiculed ever since.

when they tell me "sometime between noon and 4" or "2 and 7" id expect them to at least be there in that 4 or 5 hour window. the cable guy went to west instead of east, the lady told him she didnt order cable so he canceled my install. without even calling to see if it was right or not, which the lady telling him she didnt order cable should have been a large flag on that.

How about when the company budgets you an hour for a simple install. You show up at the house and the owner tries to get you to do the hardest install possible. It's damn easy to run the drop to the house, setup the box and run wire along the side of the house to the room where the tv is. BUT NOOOOOOOOOO! The owner is always like. "i dont want all that cable running alongside my house, why dont you run it straight up to the attic, then crawl around in my 400 degree oven then fish it down into my living room. Suddenly a 1 hour install turns into a few. Then people get bumped to another day. Then you show up tired and over-heated to your next appointment to. "You know you are 3 hours late?" /necks

Then you deny installs to customers that are difficult like that, or do a pre run with them before the actual install.

I love these people defending the moron cable/internet companies and their workers that barely speak english.

"Anywhere between 11-5" is a ridiculous statement that does not exist in an actual business setting and only does exist with these types of jobs because the current way its being done is retarded.

But if this is the norm, shouldn't the scheduling department adjust to that? Especially since so many companies are only doing installs during mf-9 to 5, so customers have to take time off from work..

Ummm.. What exactly are you talking about? That reality is long over.. Are you talking about Japanese auto workers? Korean? Because you just can't be talking about Americans, unless you're really that out of touch.

You shouldn't use the word "asinine" unless you know how to spell it. Makes you look like a bit of a cretin.

Why can't you guys get over simple typos? I really, really don't understand the wasted energy on your part.

So after they budget 6 hours for every supposed 1-room install, are you going to be happy when you call to get an install done, and they tell you theyll be out in two months?
