why is it that every singer I hear in every band is a tenor? I rarely hear any basses (this means a range lower than middle C). do tenors just sound better or are most basses not able to sound good enough?

tenors don't really have a wider range than basses, their range is just higher. for instance, I'm naturally a bass, but I have a 2 1/2 octave voice range.

actually i dont have any training per se, but I do sing with my high school's elite choir. i was just wondering, considering ATOT is strangely knowledgeful.

He said all, but I think he meant most... Anyway it probably has something to do with the fact the average person's speakers or headphones cost ~$0.35 and have the easiest time reproducing tenors? Just a guess. Talent doesn't matter much if the target audience has a hard time hearing it.

It sounds better to the ear.

I mean look at a piano. Play a intricate melody near middle C. It sounds right.
Play it near the low octave, it doesn't sound as clear or fresh. Play it in the upper octave ranges, it sounds fluttery. It is just a matter of what naturally sounds good.

If most music and instruments sound better at this range, then a bass singer will not be able to cut through the instruments which are on a higher octave to make it sound right. Guitars don't sound that great with bass singers.

Listen to some Barry White music and you will see that most of the background is bass guitar and percussions.

That is also another reason. Tenors are harder to come by. Singing in bass clef is much easier for most guys. Strong powerful tenor voices aren't the median of the population of men out there.

People like to hear what is good and also what is rare/unique.

Yep.

You can't even hear my best singing voice very well when there is other noise. But at least it carries very far.

If I sing in a manner that people can hear, I don't sound as good

actually not really. I should've signed up last year, since auditions were in Cleveland, but i was 15 then and not too excited about singing to other people, by myself (comfortable only in a choir). I'm probably going to audition sometime, though.
