Why is it taking so long for my hard drives to search?

WD Black 32 MB cache with ~500GB storage capacity has a few gigs free.

another WD (non black, but 7200 rpm and SATA) has like 40 GB free of ~320 GB capacity. I believe it has 32 MB cache buffer, but it may be 16MB... I'd have to check. I got it on sale from Comp USA long time ago.

I'm sure my WD enterprise is fine since I've barely put anything on it.

Do you have Search indexing on in services ? Then go to my computer right click your drive and make sure index is on...

it should be instant as you type if indexing is working properly

what are you searching for? specific word, contents of a file or something else?

Is the drive fragmented as it will increase searching espically with a lot of directories.

is the OS on the drive that is slow? (OS overrides any user drive access has has for the recent versions of windows).

Any thing else running in the back ground? anti virus?

Most importantly make sure drive is search index service is enabled.

Turn it on you might have to put all your files in cache,, index cache,, so search results come as you type. Also remember you gotta be in a partical folder, to seach up top it will only search that area. So go to C ,, open it up ,,,,,, in my computer and properties,, and take check on. but first turn it on or off so it can cache things.. say yes to prompt,, takes a while, but you will like it...... gl

Its great for me. I don't think Vista sp2 had search issues.

Gotta use search indexing service, and cache your files,, turn check on off ,, right click C ,, and do that take check on bottom off and on, and it will take its time,, when its done, search is instant.........

W7 pownz I forgot how vista was,,, but I go to start button type something and it comes right up..
