While others have so little? It just doesn't seem fair sometimes. Hell, just look at that Bar Mitvah thread with that father spending a ridiculous amount of money having big bands perform. There are people out there who work their entire life and don't make the money that was spent in one day. It's not just money either... it can be intelligence, looks, health, etc. I believe in God, but it's just hard to understand why he created people who seem to luck out on everything, while others seem to get the brunt end of the stick.

If you believe in an afterlife (heaven and hell), things start to make a little bit of sense.

Yep, and it isn't fair.

Just make use of the last legal drug that's worth anything -- that being alcohol of course.

Even the rich drink it ... it must be good ...

QFT.. life isn't perfect, therefore nothing will be fair-- and don't expect it to become perfect anytime soon :p

And yet psychology says that our level of health, wealth, intelligence, etc have little correlation with life satisfaction and happiness. Fair, n'est-ce pas?

Greed.

It's what's killing us all.

I can tell this is going to be a good thread. :p

Everyone has their own problems, including myself, I can safely say I'm sure the mods have problems of their own too in life (read: not AT) ;)

That's a copout to the questions. It's easy just to brush those types of questions off and chalk it up to being the way it is. But why does it have to be that way?

I'm always confused by this argument, now I'm not christian, but they have a nifty way of putting it: Man may not look upon the face of god and live.
One way of understanign this is that as a human you are confined to your human perspective, you can't possibly understand 'god's' purpose. Any attempt to do so will be only a reflection of the truth seen through your ego.
You're antropomorphising a power greater than yourself. That's doomed to failure.
That being said. Wealth is a subjective thing, there are many destitute buddhist monks who are perfectly content with their existence.

Ouch! Who let the liberal out of P&N?

It's called life. And it ain't fair. It's a concept The Left has yet to comprehend.

Nope... not a liberal, just something I was pondering, that's all.

it doesn't have to be that way, but there is nothing saying it won't. These things are more or less random. there will of course be some who get everything, most will only be "average", and some will have none of these good traits.

And I'm sure some malnourished kid in some third world country is thinking the same about you. It's easy to look up and envy those who are better off while you neglect to realize there are even more people below you.

Very true. Just b/c someone is wealthy doesn't mean they have it all. Maybe he has a miserable home life or bad family ties. He may have a lot of money but has a job he hates and dreads the thought of waking up just b/c he has to go to work. On the other side, someone may be dirt poor but couldn't be more happy cause they know they work hard for what money he has and has a nice family to come home to every night that loves him very much. Just depends on how you look at things.

So it's unfair that someone took risks in life to start a company and 30 years later he's a millionaire and the guy who dropped out of high school because he was too lazy to study and ended up working at Mcdonald's for minimum wage? Yea life's unfair.

I tend to believe that everyone has about the same amount of [insert arbitrary units]. Some people have more of one thing than others, but in the end it works out to being even for the most part.

You can't discount the qualitative things that people have. You need to take that into account as well.

Overgeneralizations...nice job. That's why I refuse to declare myself liberal OR conservative. I prefer "other" so I don't look like a total jerk to 50% of the population.

Removing the needless categorization (and who knows, maybe he's generally conservative?), I agree. Life isn't fair. That's simply how it is.

Don't you think that we all, as humans, share a common goal of bettering ourselves and reaching some sort of peace? I know it seems impossible to achieve, so life will remain unfair indefinitely, but theoretically speaking, don't we all wish to get to a point of equality and equilibrium?

Well to plays devils advocate, there are people who actually inherit such fortunes and never actually lifted a finger to earn it and also lead happy and fulfilling lives.

I don't think I need to bring up the "no one said life was fair" debate. For you to be able to complain about it online thru a computer means you're pretty well off than perhaps 50% or more of the people in this world and you should appreciate it because I know that a lot of people would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

Life isn't fair, but you have to remember that there's probably at least one person out there who you have it better than. It's a sad way to look at it half-full, because you have to bring someone else down in order to do it, but it's better than counting the 500,000 people who have it better than you.

No, much more than 50%: Global Rich List
