why is it some parents don't care

I spent the entire day at a charity garage sale raising money so 10 kids could go to the state special olympics 3 day meet.
It costs about $150 for each kid we take to the state meet. I even spent 3 evenings this week picking up donations that had been called in...

Of 10 kids (found out all still had both parents, so 20 parents) only 4 parents showed up.
2 for 1 kid and two for another kid. And those 4 parents didn't need the fund raiser to pay for their kids part of the trip.

The parents of 8 kids kids didn't even show to help work the garage sale, yet they all voted to have the garage sale as their fund raiser this year.

The parents of 7 kids didn't even make a donation of any goods for the event.

If you had a special kid, would you donate time or any goods to help pay for your child to go to a three day event?

This obviously isn't the kids fault, they want to go stay in a college dorm for three days and compete.

What gives, don't parents care anymore?

It's for the same reasons as why we have 12 year olds smoking, 13 year olds getting arrested, 14 year olds getting pregnant, and 15 year olds killing their friends.

Don't have any answers for you except that in many families a special needs youngster can be overwhelming to the point of depression for the parents.

I do want to say thank you do much for all the work and effort you do to help support the Special
Olympics, that alone makes you a very special person in my book !!!!

that's frightening. i'm glad my parents taught me important things like morals, respect, and independance as soon as they could.

morals, respect and independence are a rare trait among kids today... unfortunately. I know when i have kids i'm going to make sure to raise them properly and teach them things like this.

yeah, i'm 19 years old and i notice such a huge difference in kids that are about 4 or 5 years younger than me. not even the fact that i'm more mature than them. they all seem to act like such unrulely punks, they never listen to my advice as "an elder that grew up during their generation", and they blatantly insult me all the time. parents just stopping caring recently, i was never like those kids at that age, never.

maybe to some. but considering most of my friends are 25 or so kind of leads me to believe that i'm more mature for my age.

Some parents just might not have the time...maybe working two jobs just to support the family or something.....my mom works very hard(divorced) .....i geuss i've got alot of morals, maybe too many since i'm known as the goody-goody.....

Unfortunately parents are an endangered species. These days we mostly have sperm and egg donors.

I agree on both points.

While hopefully not to the point of actual depression, the parents have to be under increased strain while raising their special needs children. They might not have as much time and energy as other parents to devote to fundraising for their children's activities. Don't rush to judgement until you've met them, and better yet experienced what they're up against.

And add my kudos for the time and energy you put into fundraising on their behalf.
